BMWNA Reports Q3 2023 U.S. Sales Results

BMW of North America Reports Q3 2023 U.S. Sales Results.
  • BMW Brand Sales Increase 7.6% in Q3 2023 vs Q3 2022.
  • Fully Electric Vehicles Account for 15.5% of Total BMW Brand Sales in Q3.
  • Q3 2023 MINI Sales Increase by 10.1% vs Q3 2022.
  • Woodcliff Lake, NJ – October 3, 2023… BMW of North America today reported Q3 2023 sales results for the BMW and MINI brands in the U.S.
BMW Brand.
In the third quarter of 2023, BMW brand sales in the U.S. totaled 83,949 vehicles, a 7.6% increase over the 78,031 vehicles sold in the third quarter of 2022. Through the first three quarters of the year, BMW brand sales total 254,363 vehicles, a 10.3% increase as compared to the same period last year.

BMW Electric Vehicle Sales.
BMW delivered 13,079 battery electric vehicles in Q3, setting a new quarterly benchmark for BEV sales. Through the first three quarters of 2023, BMW sold a total of 31,043 electric vehicles, which accounts for over 12% of total sales volume year-to-date. The first ever BMW i5 will begin arriving in U.S. showrooms in the fourth quarter.

“Together with our dealer partners, we are happy with the result achieved in the first three quarters, but more importantly, the strength of our product lineup positions us well for a strong finish to the year,” said Sebastian Mackensen, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “We offer a variety of different vehicles to meet our customers’ needs – from sedans and Sports Activity Vehicles to internal combustion and electric drivetrains – and we’re pleased to report that demand remains high.”

MINI Brand.
MINI brand sales in the U.S. totaled 7,900 vehicles in the third quarter of 2023, an increase of 10.1% vs the 7,178 vehicles sold in the third quarter of 2022.

It is interesting to see car sales increase by 45% and SUVs decline by 10%. X5s are BMWs current best seller by volume and accounted for approximately 40% of SUV sales and 27% of all BMW sales in Q3 2022. I’m sure others were in the same boat as me last fall, wanting a pre-LCI 45e before tax credit limitations, buttons disappearing, and the significant MSRP increase.

It's quite likely that some X5 buyers purchased iX instead. iX sales increased almost 3x YTD 2022 vs YTD 2023.

Pleasant surprise: 68% increase in 4 series sales YTD 2022 vs YTD 2023.

8 series sales are losing steam. Unfortunate.

Great point. Dealers are discounting iXs significantly more now too.

Discounts and lease credits will clear out an inventory.

I4s are included in the 4 series total. Probably responsible for the increased sales.

All the big grill models crushed sales numbers. iX is massively impressive for a $100k car. Feels like they sold same number of iX as Model X, which has a 10 year head start (Model S and X sold combined 13k globally). i4 is also growing really fast

Looks like Z4 sales are losing steam as we head into the end of vert season for most of the country.

X5s are not doing well. The LCI is the big reason. Wonder if you can snag 8 series for a deep discount.

Not the LCI. It’s the iX cannibalizing the X5.

Hard to really interpret the growth numbers because supply was constrained last year. BMW was still in supply chain hell. So likely lowered last years numbers and pushed folks into this year. But considering interest rates doubled (5.99% vs 2.99% last year), still impressive.

Take rate reflects BEV penetration. Two vehicles are fairly comparable, just depends if someone wants PHEV/ICE or BEV. Incentives have probably helped drive sales, too.

EV I choose Tesla Model Y Performance.

Superior Battery Technology, Charging Networks that work.

10 plus years of drivers Data on EVs that is Artificial Intelligence for Full Self Driving that is in its infancy.

Tesla is a Technology company and it’s iPhone are the vehicles.

My wife went from a MY Performance to iX and the iX is a much better vehicle in terms of drivability, comfort and build quality. The range is also as good. It is more expensive but you can’t really go back from an iX to MY IMHO. It’s like a Toyota Corolla vs BMW 3 series.
