BMW X1: the lowdown

BMW knows a good thing when it sees it, and booming sales of its 4x4s have convinced the board to grow the X-rated SUV family. This is one of the first sightings of the X1, that will slot into the range under the X3 and X5 in 2010.

Our artist's impression above, and scoop shots on the next pages, reveal a mini-me soft-roader with shrunken looks borrowed from its suprisingly familiar bigger brothers. It'll be aimed squarely at the mass-market (Toyota RAV4, Land Rover Freelander) as well as the burgeoning premium 4x4 sector (forthcoming Audi Q3, Merc's BLK).

BMWs in wellington boots might offend purists, but under chairman Norbert Reithofer's new regime anything that sparks profitable growth is positively encouraged. So expect gaps in the range to be plugged and new niches sniffed out. Busy times in Munich...

It will have a four-wheel drive system shared with the forthcoming Mini SUV, and is expected to use engines borrowed from the 1-series range. So power outputs will stretch from 145bhp to 220bhp, with a broad spread of petrols and diesels. At around 4300mm long, it mirrors the footprint of a RAV4.

and here I thought the X3 was pretty small.... If the size difference between the X5 and X3 is the same ratio as the X3 and new X1, then be prepared to drink your morning travel coffee in a thimble.

"....under chairman Norbert Reithofer's new regime anything that sparks profitable growth is positively encouraged. So expect gaps in the range to be plugged and new niches sniffed out. Busy times in Munich..."

Premium baby "X-er"...with available 4-wheel drive? Man I love it.
This may make sense only to those in BMW's marketing dept....and about 1/2 the people on my block who will rush out and buy one.

The reality of everyday applicability has nothing to do with corporate avarice and consumer desire.
This thing looks like an free atm for Munich...it hits "cute" "expensive" & "new" simultaneously.
Add another shift in Leipzig.
(and apologies for the pos photoshop)

This photo illustration (at the very top of this thread) is really bad! Remember the photo renderings of the X6 before BMW brought out the real deal at the Frankfurt auto show? These renderings were awful, too. Some of these photo illustrators really try hard but I think they miss the mark more than they hit it.

You can see some of the bad X6 renderings here (mixed in with the actual vehicle): http://images.google.ca/images?q=x6&...mages&ct=title

Case in point...new X6 with more flame surfaces than a Memphis BBQ joint.

What's sort of ironic is the old 1addicts logo photoshop that was
amazingly accurate in forecasting the 135.

I'd be curious about the rear design of that "SUV" or "SAV." I think the rear appearance is crucial in separating it from another (little) station wagon. :eyebulge:
