Trunk opening

I assume it is normal for the trunk to only unlatch and not spring open when you release it? Seems odd, and unlike my F82; much more convenient for the trunk to self-open, especially if you have your hands full. It's rather heavy to manually pull up. I wonder if stronger gas struts could be fitted.

Mine is the same, just unlatches and then I have to raise it. From everything I have read that's how its meant to be or at least how everyone's is.

The more spring is more stress on the struts, better chance of them wearing out or breaking. I prefer it not to spring (boing) open.

Just like my E46 M3 back in the day. It's cooler this way.

So you're saying too much boing and it wears out sooner?

All the sedans and coupes I have owned I have had to open the trunk after release so nothing new there. It's not particularly heavy but the way it pivots is a bit odd, yet similar to other BMW trunks.

Not all things that boing wear out! My '15 F82 M4 had a self-opening trunk, and while the struts did get weaker after 9 years it was always a nice convenience.

The G80/82 and F80/82 used the less compact arc-style hinges that can easily have an actuator added. The much more compact pantograph style hinges in the G87 and F87 don’t have room for a bulky actuator, but do allow more trunk space than if the arc-style hinges were used.
