Hill Assist?

I noticed that when I stop at a light or stop sign the brake remain engaged after I take my foot off the petal, until I provide enough force to release them (Manual), My Subaru STi had this feature also called "Hill Assist", basically helps so you don't roll backwards. I cannot find anything stating that the M2 has this or anything stating how to turn it off. Can anyone else confirm this happened to them or am I just losing it lol, if so any ideas how to turn it off?

Look for the Auto H buton on the central console. At least that’s how it works on my auto.

We don't have this button on the manual.

I don't like it either. Maybe it can be turned off in a setting. Sometimes the brake releases too hard and it isn't smooth. This could be great though, for a new manual driver.

I use the feature so have not tried turning it off (manual). I believe it releases after 3 sec or so.
Why does it interfere with your driving?

They call it Drive-off assistant. Manual does not describe ability to disable it.

I had hoped that following the release of the latest software update (07/2023.53), that the auto-handbrake enable feature would have been restored when parking.

Alas, no such luck.

My car is also manual and I have verified that in neutral the system does not work. In first gear yes but I have not tried it with reverse gear. Does it also work with reverse gear?

This device was already available on manual BMWs in the 90s and I always found it very practical although it is somewhat abrupt.

Had it in my 07 335i, lost it with my Audi S5 and now happy to have it back on the M2.

If you're in 1st gear, the car will hold.
If you're in neutral, it will not.

Not sure why the car being held from rolling back bothers you, but it shouldn't hold if you're in neutral. I haven't tested it in the G87 because I don't like rolling back.
I dislike it because it isn't a smooth release and I do not require the its assistance. If I was a new manual driver or lived somewhere with crazy hills then I probably wouldn't mind but neither apply to me. I don't know it's the jerkiness of the release that bothers me the most.

Thanks for the info everyone, I didn't know it only lasts 2 seconds... ill have to try and see if I can work the timing so it releases be I attempt to go.

I agree with what you are saying 100%. It isn't every time, but maybe 1 out of 10 starts, the brake is a little harsh letting go. I've even noticed it sometimes on very slight grades that would never need the assist. I would turn it off given the option. I simply don't need it.

The buttons on the automatics look nicer than on the manuals...

Other than a couple of different functions, the material, feel and quality of the buttons is exactly the same whether auto or manual.

Functions may be same but they look pretty different. The manuals have matte plastic buttons with only a few of them having LED indicators/back lighting where the autos looks like they have a clear plastic with more LED indicators/back lighting. Looks are subjective I guess but to me it looks nicer.

Interesting! Now, I am not sure which one I like the most. But I can see the auto option getting scratches easier than the manuals.

Other than a bit of a sheen on the ones in the auto, the buttons look and feel the same. The LEDs are only more numerous due to the auto-specific buttons that are added. Having driven both cars, the iDrive controller is also better positioned in the manual in my opinion, as I found I can rest the heel of my hand on the armrest in a more comfortable position that is much more like operating a mouse, than part way up the wrist with the auto config that is further away from the armrest.

The idrive knob is definitely easier to reach in the manual.

I personally think piano gloss looks plasticy and cheap, I like the matte buttons. But YMMV of course.

I believe if you stop and put it in neutral it will release (or not function). Then shift to 1st and go. I'll confirm that on the next drive. It definitely always engages when I stop and am in gear.

Agreed, while I was out over the last couple of days confirmed that if you let the hold release it won’t re-engage either, so very easy to defeat at a red light if you don’t want it to interfere.

By letting the hold release you mean release the brake for the 2 seconds or what ever the time is and then press the brake again and it wont re-engage?

Yeah I have been playing with some ways to get around it, so its not too bad now that I know it has a timed release

I hate the hill assist. I find it shocking how my Golf R and Fiat 500 Abarth had an option to turn it off, but my BMW M2 doesn't.

Oh well. It hasn't been too annoying yet, but I hope there is a way to turn it off one day. Maybe a software update?
