SST Valve Controller

Hey!

Anyone buy and install the SST valve controller? Got mine today, have time to install it, but………. Didn’t get any manual or literature.

Now before you all tell me it’s easy! Yes I know how to route wires and how to plug stuff in.

Problem is, what do the buttons do? How do you program them to always stay open or so on. I know it has a memory feature but have no idea how to set it.

Just would be nice to know what I need to know.


So if anyone could post up some pics of the operating manual that would be great!!

Does any of those valves controller (SST, VSC…) send something to the Log ?

In other words, If I plug this and then unplug before going to the maintenance, is there a way BMW can find out something has been done (if they decide to investigate afterwards in case of engine issue for example) ?

if the valves are forced into a closed position and the engine is pushed to its limits, this could indicate that the valves weren't operating as they would under standard conditions. Normally, the valves would open slightly when the throttle is fully engaged.

While I'm not sure why you would choose to do this, still the likelihood of causing damage in this scenario is minimal.

However, if concerns about such uncommon and unlikely scenarios are significant for you, it may be best to keep it stock.

Agreed...modding is not for everyone. There will always be an inherent risk (just goes along with the concept, no matter who minimal or extreme). If the warranty issue is of utmost concern, I suggest keeping the car stock or limit any modifications to be done by BMW that would be covered under warranty.

Do these valve controllers make that much in sound difference ? Hard to tell with youtube videos. The stock exhaust is loud enough with a downpipe for me but if the valve is not opening all the way... Id want to change that.

Valves don’t completely open in sport mode and don’t open at all in comfort, that’s the biggest thing you’re changing with a controller

Yes, they do (stock valves only open ~85% of capacity, max while the controller will open the valves fully)...will also add performance, the level of which depends on what other mods you have or will be doing.

Ok make sense just wish I could hear the difference to see if it's worth it but sounds like the way you guys are talking about it, it is worth it. And it's either this controller or a tune correct ?

Other than needing the valves to be fully opened for a tuned car, the two do not really have anything to do with each other. What are your end gials, sound or performance? And how much money do you want to spend?

I'm just thinking if I'm going to tune the car with fetmo and such then I won't need to buy the valve controller and just wait until I get my car tuned. Money is not a issue if it makes the car have significantly more power. The valve being open is strictly for sound. The tune is for another upgrade but if I'm going to do that already then I might as well wait. Hope that makes sense.

I'll address the tune first. Depending on if you go stage 1 or 2 will make a difference however I will focus on stage 2 here. Here is a list of what you will need to properly and safely build for a stage 2 tune: femto unlock, exhaust (best to go with a full exhaust with valve controller, like Valvetronic), high flow downpipes (200 cel), heat exchanger, oil cooler/intercooler, trans cooler (for 8AT.. recommended), colder range plugs, intake/drop in air filter and of course the tune. Optional are charge pipes (hot and cold side). Parts cost you are looking at $15,000+ (depending on brands and NOT including labor). For this tune, valve controller is a must.

For sound only (and a little performance) just valve controller. For sound and a little more performance, valve controller and partial exhaust "pieces" (a few options). For sound and a bit more performance, full exhaust with valve controller. Parts cost up to $3,500+ (not including labor).

For the price, the SST valve controller is an excellent mod to improve the sound.

It's also an excellent option for customers getting a midpipe or exhaust upgrade and want to amplify the sound by another 10-20% on Wide open throttle while still keeping the same volume on comfort.

Awesome thank you for the input. I have about half or more already of what you listed for mods. I don't want to do anything to the exhaust as it's loud enough with downpipe and sport plus for me. Just wanted to add a little more sound so valve controller is good. I am going to do a tune anyways which is why I asked if it was redundant to get both a tune and a valve controller if they both do the same thing. If the tune does not do what the valve controller does then that makes up my mind of buying a valve controller.

Tune will not have any effect on the valves...but tuned car really needs the valves to be fully opened under boost. Bottom line...tuning tge car, you want, or need, to open up the calves. Get the controller for the minimal cost.
