"Transport Mode" on new cars

I was doing some research about how new cars are delivered from the SLP plant and just read that these cars have "Transport Mode" which prevents going over a certain RPM before it is disabled at the VDC before delivery to the dealer. I'm not too fond of the idea of a random dockworker driving my brand new M2 off the boat and potentially redlining it or revving it for no reason so my worries were sort of put away at this news.

Is this something that actually exists, or is it an urban legend of sorts?

Patiently waiting for delivery of my new G87

Hmmm, I always wondered what the hell happened in those 16 miles before I got it. Interesting!

If you’re worried about what happens to a car between leaving the factory and reaching the dealership, I recommend building a home made bicycle.

Transport mode does exist on all BMW’s and MINI’s. I’ve been told it limits speed to a max or 40 mph but also heard 60. Limits RPM and hard acceleration as well. Not that it relates much either but it won’t allow for the center screen to turn on and limits instrument cluster settings so it can list the 12v charge level. Hopefully this eases the thoughts of a dock worker redlining your M2 all the way to the VPC.

Those along the delivery line drive so many vehicles (many thousands a year for stevedores on and off loading the RO-RO ships), that they are more concerned about efficiency and precision in driving the cars. With the confined spaces of the car transporter infrastructure in general, they will be a lot more skilled than the average driver will be. Anyone driving the cars in a careless manner will not have the job for long.

My son drives about 100,000km a year purchasing and delivering vehicles as the main part of his job. Ensuring the vehicles are delivered in perfect form is important from a profit perspective, he hasn’t had any issues in well over 1,000,000km driven for work in terms of damage, accidents or any tickets.

You do realize that transport mode is intended to prevent / deter someone from stealing your car off the delivery truck or VDC right? This system initiates & wakes up the vehicle DME. But won't let it go too far before it needs to be plugged into the BMW mothership mainframe.

I actually had a chance to sit/move my M8 when it first arrived before they performed the pre sale work. Transport mode limits the vehicle to 25mph, (if you google map the ports you will see speed limit on the roads they us to and from are 15mph). Only the center console works at this time, no access to settings or anything really. Blinkers, lights all work as intended and horn works. ASS works or some form of it, it won't let the car idle for long. At the dealer they hookup and program based on your VIN this part allows the vehicle to be driven fully as intended.

Its an M2, not an F8 or 765LT...and they produce thousands and thousands of M2s. As stated, you think they care so much about an M2 to lose their job over?

Yes transport mode is real and it limits the car to low speeds and rpm to be able to move it around during transport from the factory to the dealer you need a factory level scan tool to enable the rest of the vehicle systems and take it out of transport mode and no one will be doing burnouts or reving the engine period

16??? I've never received one with more than 6. As a matter of fact they all had 6 miles (surprisingly).

I sat in a G87 in Transport Mode at the dealer when it was offloaded. There's not much that you can do to mess with it electronically, everything is basically turned off. I also don't think you can go fast enough to cause any damage either.
Besides, you ordered an automatic, trust me, nobody is revving it or driving it fast. Just enjoy the car when it comes in knowing it hasn't been tampered with.

I guess I should be more worried about who takes delivery of my car at the dealer huh? Heard some not so good stories about routine "pre delivery inspections"

Might be true now however, when I was living in Halifax (2004-2007), I went to see the port or arrival and witness drivers abusing new cars while positioning them on the lot off the boats. I called BMW Canada and did my best Karen duty to raise my concerns.

Update: Took delivery of my G87 yesterday and it was still in "Transport Mode" at the dealer. They had to hook it up to ISTA during the PDI to disable it. I thought they disabled it at the VPC but hey I'm not complaining
