S58 is a monster. This motor has some insane potential. Love it.

Love all of Jason Cammisa's videos. They're not just entertaining but I always learn something new, like the fact the M2 punches above its weight, literally and figuratively.

Great video, but I think it's better than the 2JZ for sure.

Pleasantly surprising. 453hp my ass.
I do love how my car pulls in 3rd gear above 4K.

Wasnt the M2's 6MT supposed to be trash and terrible?

Yet the Tremec and the Lotus's was worse?... ??

It's a carryover from the F87; gearing is from the S55 and not matched to the S58. Hence, pulls like a hell from 3rd and on. Sad really, imagine what this car could do if they actually developed a MT for it.

Fully agreed. These videos they produce are simply on a whole different level. It's like a "mini" feature film for us motor heads.

Yeah Cammisa's videos are all great.

Secondly - I didn't know the 6spd was a carry over from the F87, thats interesting and explains a few things...still ordered it because I wanted a MT but kind of surprised they didn't adjust it more for the new engine.

His on screen relationship with randy pobst is amazing. And all his videos are fantastic, look up his legend series videos, he has one on bmw as well. Take this level of production but in like a documentary.

Other than the shift linkage feel (which is now OK as opposed to sub-par in the F87), the ratios are perfect for the S58 in the M2, evenly spaced and top gear is above the power peak at maximum speed. If anything it is better matched to the S58 than the N55/S55, no reason to change it that I can see.

+1, I think it suites the car much more than the S55 in my F87C.

The gap between 1 and 2 is larger than it needed to be because of the lack of gears, IMO.

It reaches a very high speed in 6th, and that is why the gears have such wide ratios.
I think it is either 6 manual gears or no manual availability. The engineering cost to have a transmission manufacturer produce or adapt a 7-speed unit for BMW would not be viable for the very low volumes across their production, likely less than 20,000 per year over all manual M-cars, or less than 1% of vehicles produced by BMW.

I agree with this and will also add that sourcing a different transmission would have raised the price of the car. Economies of scale sharing parts across cars drives so much efficiency.

100% agree that there's nothing wrong with the gearing of this six speed, it's evenly spaced across the range and doesn't drop you out of the power band on the upshift.

If you want to ding this transmission for anything, it should be the lack of no-lift shift in 2023.

Also agree that 7 (or even 8) manual gears would be better for a car that gets to 170MPH, but we all know that will never happen.

Hell, 3 years ago we weren't sure the G87 would even have an MT option. So I'll take 6 gears and be happy about it. (And hey, we got rev-matching!)

The Carrera T has a manual with 7 gears. Less power but same 4.2 to 60.

Right but all of it's weight is over the rear, on the wide tires. With less torque and not a lot of wheelspin, hooking up is really easy. A manual G87 can hit 60 in 3.8 if launched properly. Look here: https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2...mparison-test/

I've done 4 sec. easily. My 1, 2 shift is smooth. I've had the car since April. Almost 5k on the odometer.
