Should cars have built-in speed limits? Some think it’s time
The National Transportation Safety Board has recommended that all new automobiles come equipped with technology meant to make speeding difficult or impossible, a move that comes after an accident in Las Vegas killed nine people.
It’s the second such recommendation from the NTSB in six years, but road safety advocates are not optimistic about the technology’s adoption despite speed being a common factor in auto fatalities. Intelligent speed assistance technology, or ISA, uses GPS and sign recognition to prevent vehicles from exceeding the speed limit in a given zone. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-ne...ogy-rcna126053 |

Any limit that was programmed in could be programmed out.
But I would support the addition of tech that would recognize when the vehicle was in the passing lane and would accelerate the car to 15 clicks over the speed limit. If the driver couldn't handle it all he he has to do is move the right to regain control of the accelerator. Traffic would flow better, road rage would decrease and all would be right with the world.

None of these technologies are foolproof and what happens if you need to do an evasive maneuver to avoid a collision? I have avoided a couple accidents by simply speeding up. In some cases, slowing down is not an option.

I’m not entirely against this idea. Unless someone is into street racing there isn’t a need for triple digits capability on public roads.
My father was near missed by a speeding criminal fleeing cops at an intersection blowing through a red light, guy doing >85 in a 35 ended up losing control and ramming into a house. So maybe something that limits a max of double the limit? Or 20mph over posted? Yes this will piss people off, empty backroad driving will suck. |

Yes, for school zones, and anything under 35 mph.
A left lane warning would be great as well, for all those driving in the left lane constantly. That'd fix 98% of the traffic on most highways. |

Give'em an inch, they'll take a mile. No half measures could be accepted as they'll never stop there.
Would absolutely kill the fun of driving along with your freedom to choose. I get the argument for it, but you can't trust the government with power. They have far too much already and NEVER seek to give any back to their subjects.

Good news they can put the speed controls in with the distracted driver kill switch. Won't that be fun.
Federal law requires kill switch in cars after 2026 https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2060368 |

If this phenomenon comes true in 15 years I’m okay with it as I’ll be 90 and both me and my V8 of whatever brand I’m driving will have served our useful lives. Complete nonsense. The effing government never takes a day off in their quest to control our lives. That said I do support removing the idiots from our society. After all, we humans are the only species that doesn’t thin the herd.

Any EV cars definitely need to have build in speed limits. Even low end EV cars can easy reach over 300 hp. Not to mention high end EV are over 600 hp. If you hit by a EV (easy to be over 1 ton), good luck

I honestly can’t believe those who said yes. No. Period. End of story. Case closed. This is nonsense.
Carry on. Edit. What’s next? Limiting 0-60 times? Car manufacturers will only make 4 cylinders that have a max speed of 55 and get there in 10 seconds? Shoot me now. Hopefully I’ll be dead by then.

The government is one of the most corrupt, wasteful, and pervasive groups known to man, so its only inevitable for them to abuse it, like they do with every single other rule or law they implement.

TEMPE, Ariz. - Court documents are providing additional details on a crash over the Thanksgiving weekend that killed two people. According to the documents, the man was arrested early Saturday morning by Tempe Police officials. The incident, according to court documents, began to unfold at around 1:36 a.m. on Nov. 25, when Tempe Police tried to stop a Ford Mustang in the area of Rural Road and Terrace. The Mustang in question, according to investigators, was seen taking part in a street race with another vehicle. Speed reportedly reached in excess of 100 mph (~160.9 km/h) in an area where the maximum speed was 35 mph (~56.3 km/h). Court documents state that when officers made contact with Glasscock, he "repeatedly made spontaneous statements indicating he should not have been driving, and that he had been drinking alcohol." https://news.yahoo.com/nevada-man-ar...191034329.html Everyone buying a new car should not have to pay for a Idiot driving drunk. |

The 0-60/¼-mile/top speed parts are safe, they have to do with freedom, and it's one one thing we won't ever give up. That's why you have 47M licensed drivers that can't pass a driving test. And yes, I'm one of those that think to get a license you should have to take an ANNUAL written test, driving test, vision/hearing/spatial-awareness test, and drug test before you PAY for your license. May it one day be so. |
