So, I am somewhat heavily tattooed with two brightly colored half sleeves and some work on my forearms, as well as 2 finger tattoos.

I visited the BMW dealership for service and everyone seemed to stare at my arms as if I was some sort of alien.

I am worried that they are giving me a different level of service because of my appearance as I do stand out a lot. Should I be wearing long sleeves to my next service appointment?

Only if your sleeves are full of Mercedes emblems and AMG logos. Otherwise, fuck em. In all seriousness, some people tend to hold an unconscious bias towards those that look different. Nothing you can do about it, and it’s part of the territory if you choose to get a bunch of visible tattoos. The tech working on your car likely never saw you, just reads the WO off the paper and does the job as fast as he can. He’s probably tatted up too. I wouldn’t stress about it.

Nooo...why would that matter, it's not a job interview and even then times are different. Now if you "act" the part then that would be different. Be proud of your ink and who you are don't worry what others think.

I would never get any kind of company or pop culture related tattoo. I prefer my tattoos to be timeless art, not advertising.

I'm definitely proud of my tattoos and love showing them off. I'm just worried that since I have thousands of dollars worth of art on my arms, they might think I am made of money and will try to sell me stuff I don't need or apply ridiculous markups on the parts.

I think having thousands of dollars worth of car gives it away more than tattoos, which most people(who don't have any) will have no way to appraise. It seems that you really want attention, but are afraid of what it may lead to)))

I never look at my clients ink and think I can sell them more or charge more. Doesn't even make sense.

It definitely helps when you roll up in a car at the price point of what they sell. Then you show them photos of the other cars in your stable lol.

I had a client bring his truck in for some diagnostics and recall work a few years back. Working in the back shop you don't (or rarely) talk with customers but I got a chance to talk with him (and his 2 brown labs) out in the parking lot when he dropped it off and he was probably the nicest customer I've ever had the pleasure of speaking to given the fact his truck was broken. When he came to pick up his truck he tipped me $100. He had both full sleeves and partial neck tattoo showing. I find that its the uppity white women that are the worst to deal with (just from personal experience) and have the worst attitude. There is really no correlation between tattoos=bad customers. If you walk in and they give you "dirty" looks or poor attitude then you don't want their business anyways. I'd say probably 90% of technicians have tattoos anyway.

I would say I am a pretty down-to-earth guy, I'd rather work with my hands than stare at a screen all day. I wouldn't say that it is "uppity white women" that have attitude problems, but corporate bureaucrats in general that are annoying. The same type of person who calls a plumber "unskilled labor" until their kitchen sink won't work on Thanksgiving.
