Got 230i as a loaner today
had to take my m440gc into service today and got 230i xdrive as a loaner.
![]() Man, I do understand that its not b58 engine and all but for whatever reason it put a smile on my face. It just zip zapped though the turns and it was just fun to drive. Not like my m440gc is not fun with all the mods, but the way car felt on the road was different. I was wondering if anyone here moved from 4x to 2x and what do they thing about it? I started even considering buying an m2 considering the price. Any thoughts?

I moved from an F36 430dx to M240i.
4 series just getting too big and expensive these days (same with the 3). M240i is about the same footprint as the old 4. 2 is a far sportier ride as you may expect and aside from it being 2 door opposed to 4 and the boot not being a tail gate there’s not much difference. Note the boot still fits my bike in it so I’m happy with that. Rear seats in the 2 are useless but I never use them. M cars are different. They are not just a step up the range. Different cars altogether so you can’t really compare them to the standard range. |

I went from an F82 M4 to the M240i xDrive. I had a succession of 4 series and 3 series coupes (when that was a thing) before that.
I don't miss the M4 at all. I find the 240 to be far better suited to real world, normal road driving. It's more sure footed due to the xDrive and being a little less fierce but it's got more than enough power to get a shift on in any conceivable situation. It's also cheaper to run. I was a little concerned it would be a come down after the M4 but it really hasn't been. I think as a concept BMW absolutely nailed it with this car

I won't bore you with the logistics and cost of what I was facing in order to get a "free" 10K miles condition based service at a MINI dealer nearly 520 miles (round trip) away. While I could get the necessary service done at the local BMW dealer it would not be free but cost me an estimated $750 with subsequent condition based services (free at a MINI dealer) costing even more. Decided it was time for the JCW to go. At the local BMW dealer and spotted a 2024 BMW 230i xDrive on the lot. Bought it with the JCW as a trade in. Have not quite 2000 miles on the 230i xDrive and just like the 230i before it I'm really liking the 230i xDrive. The weather has been (no surprise) wintery so the M2 remains in the garage. The 230i xDrive gets used in the cold and snowy conditions. A nice car for the weather/road conditions. But once winter is over with, and spring then summer are here, I'm sure the 230i will be equally at home on nice dry roads. Though of course it will have to share driving time with the M2. |

No? I'm comparing it to my previous 330i. I get 1/4 or more of a tank of gas in comparison and I'm paying about $10 less at the pump when I fill up due to smaller gas tank.

Saving money and getting longer range is great. Unless you're comparing to a lame EV or hybrid I don't think there is much to complain about. I get an easy 1/2 week more commute than I did previously. So yes... that is great.

I know with my 230i RWD, I get around 30 MPG mixed driving in warmer weather. My best tank was 42.4 MPG over a 500 mi road trip (one tank of gas for the whole trip). With the cold weather though, the MPG drops to around 27MPG.
With that said, I'm either in comfort mode with the shifter knocked over to sport, or driving in sport plus. I've said it before, the thing that's missing most is the great sound you get with the B58. I'm still waiting on a good A/M exhaust to help on that end. While the B48 is plenty quick and has plenty of pull off the line, it certainly doesn't pull like the B58. But for 90% of my driving, the B48 is perfect for my needs. And with the M Sport package, the car handles great and is very tossable. It just makes for a great daily driver. |

I also have a 2022 230i RWD w/ M Sport Package and can confirm it's a great daily and easy to get up to triple digits. I don't get quite the mileage you do, think I average 28 MPG from factory and my best is like 38 on a long road trip but I'm consistently 15+ over the PSL.

That seems close to what I get. Also, in the warm weather, I mostly drive with the windows down and A/C off, so that helps. Also,
for the 40+mpg trip I was on a mission to maximize MPG's. I don't know if I could reproduce it, but it was still something fun to try for ![]() |

Bigger/stickier (high performance) tires. Bigger brakes. Has some heft to it, but the weight is mitigated some I think with the presence of the CF roof. Lowers the weight some but lowers the CG too. Both cars have free condition based system servicing for 3 years/36K miles. But I have had both cars in on my dime for early oil/filter services. Cost is about the same. Biggest difference is the M2 engine requires more oil. I'm sure when the time comes the M2 tires will cost more. Brakes too. It will be like my experience with my 2002 Boxster and my 2003 996 Turbo. Both required very similar servicing but whatever I had done to the Boxster when it was time to do it to the Turbo the job cost more. I don't have a feel for how long the M2 tires will last. Both my Porsche cars went through a set of rear tires in 20K miles. This with proper alignment, me behaving myself. Just a fact of life with mid/rear engine cars the rear tires wear. I'm hoping the M2 will get better tire life. Turbo got 124K miles from the front brakes. Rear brakes were still "good" (worn but not yet to the point the wear light was on) at 161K miles. Would be nice the M2 delivers similar brake life. Hope it is not like my Hellcat which pretty much needed new front brakes at around 28K miles. (4400lb car with an automatic thus minimal engine braking.) The 230i xDrive is a bit smaller. Thus easier to run errands in. Has that 360 degree camera feature which is nice. Has an automatic but this is not to say there is any issue with the M2 and its 6-speed manual. The M2 clutch and transmission are very good. Oh one big "plus" for winter use is the 230i has a heated steering wheel. The M2 doesn't have this feature. Both have heated seats, thank goodness. As one would assume the 230i gets better gas mileage but my driving is not that much that this difference offers any compelling reason to use the 230i vs. the M2. Just grabbed a couple of gas station receipts. Over 177 miles of my usual driving the 230i xDrive got 27.2mpg. The M2 in 171 miles of my usual driving got 21.2mpg. I'm sure if I was into high miling I could get the M2 mpg better by several mpg. But the same goes for the 230i, too. The two cars don't compete. The complement each other. If I had to limit myself to just one car it would be the M2. |
