G87 M2 feature in 2024 Road & Track Performance Car Of The Year

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
https://www.roadandtrack.com/reviews...r-of-the-year/

Some exerpts of the G87:
About $4000 more than the Dark Horse and making nearly as much horsepower, the BMW M2 is a more silken companion than the Ford. Its blunt face disguises a sleek personality that’s eager and confident.

“There’s a lot really right with this car,” scribbled editor-at-large Matt Farah. “The best BMW shifter in a long time. Fantastic brakes. The *progressive traction control is great for drivers at all levels. And when traction control is turned off, the M2 is a proper hooligan set up to oversteer everywhere.”

Delivering 453 hp with a massively forgiving torque curve, the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six feels more at home in the M2 than any other BMW. “Such a great engine,” wrote Bovingdon after his 1:24.1 lap. “So fast, and the balance over the limit is so easy to manipulate. This is what people like to imagine is the feel of a Miata, only with a shitload of power.”

Perhaps the best praise in the article is this:
“It’s the best-driving BMW on sale now,”

Oddly enough, the car that performed the worst, by like a freaking mile, won the PCOTY under $100K, the Integra Type S.

What's better is they have the MSRP with the carbon fiber option which adds nothing to performance while using the Mustangs MSRP with the handling package. The M2 isn't 4k over the Mustang Dark Horse's MSRP. The Mustang is 7k over the M2.

Is it that weird that the ITS won PCOTY? The honor is as much about value and balance as performance, otherwise the GT RS3 would win every year.

The ITS isn't setting lap times, but at MSRP, it might offer the most bang for the buck in a package that can be daily-ed almost anywhere.

A few interesting take aways....

1 Weight. Everyone keeps on harping on how heavy the M2 is, but it is only 41 lbs (less than 19KG) heavier than the 2-seat pure sports car the Nismo Z, and it is 230 lbs (>100KG) lighter than the Mustang.

2 - Lap Times: The Mustang put down a monster lap time (those Trofeo RS 80 threadwear tires are something), but the BMW with usable 300 threadwear tires was only 1.6 sec behind.

pretty stupid that the mustang has Trofeo on for tests like this and apparently Ford is really strict about them staying on, makes the results kinda pointless and not the W ford seems to think it is. Anyone can slap crazy tires on a car to pad the performance stats, lets see it with the same tires everyone else is running

I'd like to see the lap times without the 5k handling package as well.

That whole article was so light on details about any of the cars. It’s really some of the worst car journalism I’ve read. I’d really like to understand the details that make a front wheel drive car a better performance vehicle. Loosing to a mustang I could handle, but the Acura? I just don’t get it. Was it purely the value proposition? The weight is an overblown non-issue. But even if it was, give me a scorecard and show me the metrics that were used.

I’ve had a fully gutted race prepped mini cooper and while wheel to wheel racing was certainly fun, I had much more fun doing laps in my F87.

Via the aricle linked above, VALUE is the justification.

--“Anyone buying this could very well end up a faster driver than someone buying an M2 or Nismo,” contended Orlove. At right around $52,000, the Type S is an expensive Integra. But amid this august group, it’s a steal. “I don’t believe you can buy a better car for less money anywhere else,” asserted Farah.

In the real world, value matters. And that’s why the Acura Integra Type S is a Road & Track Performance Car of the Year.--

I had the opposite feeling on the Integra than R&T.

For a mid $50K car (yikes!!!), the "bones" are rooted in a $25K civic, which means that things will be missing in aspects of durability and quality (not to mention slow/laggy satnav and entertainment cpu).

The lack of an engine that justifies the price is a huge omission. And I've owned cars with those little overblown turbos. They sound like vacuum cleaners and have boring linear thrust contained in the midrange only. Pulling that car to readline is as exciting as watching the nightly news. Not knocking the car, but it is a $35K car, and would have been in saner times. A few years ago, I passed on a new NSX that the dealer and acura were putting a $70K rebate on. Why? because it did not have the quality feel that the R8 had. The materials, including paint, were Accord-levels....

Never under-estimate the power of MARKETING and HYPE. Its a Honda, interesting and ulitmately 'pedestrian' for the exact reasons you have listed.

TBH, if we are prioritizing value and practicality, I STILL wouldn't take the ITS. I'd take the Civic Type R or the Corolla GR.

But yeah, factually, the DH with track pack costs a lot more than the G87. We've discussed that to death in previous threads.

despite the accord-level quality, I wished I came across this $70k rebate, and I would had jumped into the NSX without hesitation!

Damn, never liked muscle cars or Mustangs for that matter, but this Dark Horse version looks awesome.

And yes, I think the only reason why it put down the lap time it did is because of the Trofeo RS tires

Without writing a ton here, I did a 1 day m school at thermal in november. Drove an m2, m4 comp ceramic brake, and a m5 comp. Hands down the m4 was my fav. The m2 was my least. I daily an x3mc. My 2nd an lci, i had a pre lci before. I left there not wanting an m2. M4/M3 is better imo and after driving the ceramic m4 its def something special. The i4 m50 drives really well too, blew my mind to see a peak at what M will do with that 4 motor 1320hp true e M to come. Like my x3mc more than the m2 no question. Just my opinion.

Funny, I did the M Drivers Package at Thermal in November and came away with the G87 having the most balance and THE car to have in the current M lineup.

Haha! Thats awesome. I have wondered though, because the tires on the M2 I had were terrible I’m sure you’ve heard the speech how they were done with all of their tires for the year and we were dealing with whatever was on the car oem. They were roasted and we drove those things hard. The red one was super nice, not as good as I was hoping for tho

I did ask two of the instructors what their favorite car was and they both said the M3.
