Roof Rack For G87 M2

Hey,

So I've never set up a roof rack before. I am running into logistical problems transporting my track tires to the track and back. I can fit four tires in the car (19x11 - 305/30/19's) but it doesn't leave any room for a half cage or transporting luggage if I am traveling to the track.

Are the roof rack connection a universal connector? I see the "Rapid Podium Foot Pack - Thule 460R", and believe that would fit if i am not mistaken.

Any suggestions in regards to a roof rack? Any positive or negative experiences?

I do not want to do a tire trailer route.

I have the OEM cross bars (part no 82-71-2-469-102) which could not be easier to get on and off. BMW has a dedicated mounting system (at least on my carbon roof car) which is what i wanted to use. weight limit was IIRC 130 pounds. pair it with a basket and i see no reason why you coudnt stick two wheels up there.

I see an inspection sticker. Where is the registration sticker or has NY changed something?

Good catch

No registration displayed when I took the photo. I ordered vanity plates when I got the car so I didn't want to stick it on just to take it off, then like a month went by, got pulled over twice, and never got any shit about it. Then I decided to change the plate again, long story, but I didn't want to put it on until I got my new plate.

I finally got my OEMG87 plate and my registration sticker is now in the window lol.

Ironically, I finally put it on and it needs to come off so I can have the windshield tinted again.

Yeah factory holes. Super easy to put on and take off. I paid the premium for all black. They're probably the same thing.

Edit: Upon closer inspection, they are different. How it matters and why mine is so much more expensive? No idea. I just wanted all black.

it definitely looks slick in all black and my thule rack for my wife's car feels a little more premium. i was OK saving a few bucks this time around because i splurged on the ski rack (and it was in the car already at time of delivery with no hassle )

Thank you so much! Honestly I am looking for like a rack that can hold three long (wheels laying down).

Either of the roof racks we have with a roof basket and some ratchet straps will work just fine.

I'm actually trying to figure this out because I have a set of beadlocks coming and it would be hilarious to drive to the track with the wheels up on the roof.

Please update us on what you end up going with.

three (or four) wheels i would be mindful of the weight limit for each rack considering you need to add the weight of the basket as well. probably higher on thule but i have not checked to confirm.

Any update on this? Curious on where you landed. I am in a similar situation- I want to add a half cage but I want to bring my tires to the track.

unfortunately in a bit of limbo. I believe the roof weight is only ~150 lb, so the rack is ~40 and each wheel + tire is prob ~45, so I'd still need to figure out how to get two 19x11 wheels in the back.

Basically I need a half cage that is closer to the image i attached so I can still fit stuff in the trunk / rear seat. I might just spend the money for a custom half cage, but unsure if this is possible yet. Notice how the rear arms mount near the rear passenger seatbelt

I have been working on this too. I am working with a fab shop to see if we can come up with something so I can still get 3 tires in the back seat.
As a backup plan, I found that with the back seats removed, I could slide 2 tires into the back seat via the trunk. With a cage there will be some gymnastics involved in getting them in the seat area and secured. Then I could fit one in the trunk and the 4th either on the roof on a roof rack or in the front passenger seat.

Yeah I am running 19x11 so currently I have removed the rear seats and can fit three wheels standing up in the rear and one in the trunk.

Ideally with a cage and recaro seat w/ slider I'd get some more space to travel but I need that custom cage to figure it out.
