G87 or F87

I currently am looking to upgrade from my 2014 M235i to either G87 or F87 comp. F87 was a dream of mine but I am a little slumped on which one I should get.

There are multiple existing threads/arguments...er discussions on this subject. Should be a simple search....

Which one really speaks to you? If you can't decide, ideally drive both and decide which one you like more.

I had a '22 330e I bought brand new sight unseen, and had never driven. Flew from TX to TN and drove it all the way home. Turned out I really like the car for 17 months but decided I wanted more power in my daily driver.

Test drove an M340i and it just wasn't enough power difference from the 330e, so I decided to get a a full M. Was originally considering a slightly used M3 or M4 ('22+) but for slightly less $$ got a brand new G87 (also didn't test drive before I purchased).

Personally, I'm at a point where my daily drivers are all purchased brand new or maybe within 1 yr old and extremely low mileage. I don't need to spend a good chunk of change on something somebody else beat on. I also don't care about depreciation as I either pay in-full or put a lot down.

Obviously in this sub-forum I would imagine the overwhelming vote to be G87. Good luck with your choice.

Test both and decide. We have no idea what matters to you as a driver. Let us know after you decide.

G87 is objectively better in performance, comfort, and tech. Let’s ignore looks - they’re subjective. You can make your own mind up.

Now, all of that said, I think for the small % of people who plan to get an M2 and keep it forever to remind themselves in 20 years of what pre-EV life was like, consider how the cabin will age/look in 20 years. My opinion is that while in 2024 people call the F87 cabin dated, that same cabin is precisely what will make it age better than the 2024-age modern screens (in 2044).

But for 99% of people who just want a car for 2-5 years, just get the G87 and upgrade to an even better car down the road 🤷‍♂️ (G87 LCI or CS included!)

Only you can make this choice - it's gonna be your car, not ours. Drive em both, pick the one that you prefer based on your own criteria. Both great cars. Good luck!

All good cars, my 2 cents:

OG sounds best, hardest to mod, torquey down low but poops out in upper range.

Comp sounds like crap, easier to mod, suspension improved (but you can add the engine brace to OG and get same results)

G87 sounds ok, S58 is a monster- crazy hp just with a tune, suspension is sublime and a planted.

The F87 is like a rowdy teenager, always ready to step the back end out and do stupid shit.

The G87 is a more mature 20 something, but can still get crazy when you want to.

One is new with a warranty and the other is used with what's left of the original warranty. One costs substantially more than the other. Both are great cars. Factor that into your decision and test drive both extensively if you can.

What condition of F87 are you looking for?

I was in similar situation last year, I wanted a F87 Comp with low mileage.
After checking out the price, all low mileage ones were only a few grants less than G87!

Now the price difference maybe slightly better, but by paying less than $10k more, you will get a brand new car, customize your options and colors, and full warranty for 4yr/50k mi!

That's my thought, and I am still waiting for my G87 allocation to come....

so, do you need it now? or can you wait?

I loved the F87 and would have loved to save some cash, but the ride was just too harsh for me. The G87 rides much more comfortably for me and my local roads.

I was in the same boat. I had a F22 228xi (which I still have and driving it in the winter). I always wanted the F87 comp in orange.
Not many used around and they were all priced just 3k lower than a brand new G87.

I hated the G87 look in the release picture. Managed to test drove one last April when it was first shipped. That changed my mind. Got an allocation back in June and finally got it in end of October.

Now the G87 certainly has grown on me. Particularly, its side profile looks so great and makes me happy everyday.
The stance it has is better than the F87 to me.

I would still want to get the F87 comp in orange but I won't trade my ZB G87 for one.

Oh I forgot, one of the biggest factor is the Live Cockpit feature, aka HUD, is a must have for me. F87 never offered that.

I don’t have much insight, but here’s a side by side, I came across a G87 M2 in my OG today!

Not sure I’d want to pay for somebody else’s track time. YMMV

The G87 is far quicker & more refined. The OG F87 M2 with the N55 sounds better & is very fun to drive with the DCT. It would be easy to rent a OG M2 on Turo. Then find someone semi local who can give you a better feel of what the new G87 is like.

I still have my F87 comp and i still love it. I was in mind to get the G87 but have never been keen on the looks. I do have to walk to the car so looking at it is important to me and looking back when exiting. Nothing grows on me, it's either i love it or i don't really from the get go. I now have seen the G87 in real life in 3 colours. Black, Red and BG. I like the look of it in black and at push BG but red was more orangey. Anyways, I really don't hate the G87 but as i love my F87, i will hang on to it until something else comes up. Your decision, both are excellent cars but G87 is no doubt much nicer inside.

Nice! Serendipitously that happens to the same colors as my old F87 and new G87. Cool to see them side by side.

drive both and see

G87 objectively is better in most ways. performance, interior, comfort, tech, daily driver, etc.

subjectively its a harder decision and bmw community and journalists are split.

i didnt like the weight, lower redline, larger/laggier turbos with the same 3.0 displacement, lack of dct, and looks. the pricing is attractive, but i still didn't feel like it was worth trading in a paid off m2c and having a loan on a car that will face worse depreciation.

used F87 wasn't even an option to me- drove them in past and knew it wasnt really my style, the ride is brutal in comparison as others have noted. go drive everything you possibly can. no regrets on my G87 at all but still eyeing up facelifted RC Fs and FK8 CTRs as the prices have come down.
