After the break in Service

Hi all. New guy here

I was told by the Sales team that the M2 will be throttled a bit until break in Service? I cant say it was.

Over the halfway mark to service, I did a few WOT runs, and the real-time power figures on display, are still the same, even after service.

In a weird way, it now feels to me that the car is actually slower? Not sure if they run a richer map for break in period?

Everyone at BMW said after the Service, the car will be a beast. Uhm, nope.

There is nothing wrong with it, still fast and powerfull, my gripe is that I expected a little power boost after service. Or is the "unlocking" story bull dust?

Sorry sir, but nothing changes in terms of “unlocking” or software limits changing after break in. Pretty sure they only change fluids and reset the service indicator (according to my break in service record). Car power should be same before and after. Just a bit healthier to push it to the limit after!

Yeah, the only 2 main things changed on your vehicle will be the Rear diff oil and service odm. However, I felt honestly just a slight difference in the throtlle. Honestly could've been placebo.

I even had a chat with the Technician, who told me they will load new software on the car. They were talking about power restricted to 80%, and after break in service it will be 100%.

But yeah, I felt no difference in power afterwards.

There's no change to the vehicle tuning after the break in. It's all in your head.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no change in engine tune made during break in service. (See attachment...)

Besides the fluid services the RiS (running in service) is deactivated so it no longer alerts a RiS is needed.

That is the only "software" change.

The engine does run better as break in progresses, as engine friction decreases.

Last March drove a new MINI JCW 873 miles home after purchase. Quite a bit of engine break in occurred over a 2 day span and I took pains to adhere to the break in guide lines on this drive. On the 2nd day as I closed the distance to home the engine perked up considerably. This exposure to engine break in over 2 days vs. over a span of weeks really was eye opening in the engine's transformation. This for a 2.0l 4-cylinder engine making 228hp. A 3.0l 6-cylinder engine making 453hp can only manifest a more noticeable improvement.

The JCW break in for the most part occurred over 2 days/873 miles. But for my M2, I bought my M2 April 14, 2023. The 1200 (1204 to be exact) mile break in service was done May 31, 2023. So the break in occurred over about a 6 week span.

At 1205 miles I didn't hammer on the engine but after some additional miles when I did use much more throttle and run the engine up much closer to red line and up shifted (6-speed) and kept my foot in it... Wow!

Tell your “sales team” to stop getting their info from web forums and Reddit. Sheesh.

They would have to unlock the ecu to change any tuning, which they cant and dont do. All you get is fresh fluids and sent on your way.

They actually do a “break in tune” that adds about 100 more hp and let’s you redline at 8krpm instead of stopping you at 5krpm.

They also swap your fluids(oil and diff) and do a 30-point inspection.

One of these is the truth.

I wish there was a folder that all these redundant threads could be tossed into. It sure would be nice.
