6MT Clunk while shifting out of gear.

Hey folks, occasionally I experience a clunk when shifting out of gears. Is it possible that I am just disengaging the gear before the clutch is fully engaged?

Has anyone else experienced this?

Yep, happened to me today actually. It’s just user error more than likely. There are rare times I yank first to second and “pop” it because I’m not fully disengaged. Mistakes

My first gear is occasionally not "fully engaged", and I've had it pop out on occasion, with a scary thud. Is this what you mean?

Yup, okay this is what I figured.

Sort of, it only happens when I am shifting. I think I occasionally put pressure on the shifter before the clutch is fully engaged and cause this. Just need to work on my timing I guess.

Follow up question: how bad or unhealthy is this for the car? I assume there is the potential to cause damage to the transmission?

I wouldn’t say it’s good for the car, but you won’t destroy it. It’s hard on the driveline and transmission/flywheel if you’re excessively doing it, which it sounds like you are not. Just try and work on the timing so that you aren’t forcing the gears apart without being fully engaged on the clutch. A few times here or there are not going to harm the car significantly.

Slow is fast, fast is smooth. Once you get in the motion and understand the car, you’ll mitigate these little nuances from happening. It’s a fun process and why we drive manuals to begin with!

Enjoy and try not to worry too much!
