Where is the M2 built?

I assume the M2 is built in Germany. Is that correct? Thanks

Nope in the Mexico plant, but it's a really good factory that was built a couple years back so it's got all the current machinery in it.

I had a M340i that was built there and it was rock solid, wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't built in Germany.

My bad, not sure why I thought the S58 was made in Austria.

I think Mexico is doing a great job at their new plant. But I only want me powertrain & drivetrain built by zeee Germans. That S58 is might complex & therefore, I'm glad the M division doesn't contract this vital piece of the car (literally the heart of this car) out to anyone else.

Interesting. Looks like different production lines could differ?? This is from the window sticker on my car. It says the engine was sourced from Austria. Country of origin and where stuff is made are not always the same place.

Yes, but final inspection & assembly of the main block + heads are all done in-house.

Maybe that means some of the 6-speed manuals were built in Mexico. LOL Had no idea Austria was building the S58 now.

I have the 8AT but wasn't aware of any transmissions being built in Mexico. Then again, I guess they are leaving it up to my imagination...

It’ll be the BMW plant Steyr, they recently moved some of the “S” engines there as they’ll be making the new hybrid drivetrains for M cars in future

That's very true from that standpoint. The human capital & highly trained people are great in Mexico. But unless they have an M powertrain & drivetrain specialized team with some great experience, I hope your ZF 8-speed auto was not built there.

There was a video someone posted of a 3 series being built at the plant in Mexico. I’ve been to several BMW factories, including Sparatanburg here in SC and Munich. The Mexico location was identical in quality and workmanship, top notch.

If it did, it’d be the same as the rest of the car. Same as everywhere else. I’m curious if your car is having any issues you’re attributing to the location it was made in.

The terms "made" and "assembled" are being used in the same context. The S58 is not necessarily "made" in Austria but assembled there (hence also being said to be "made in Austria"). The parts could come from various locations.

Am I the only one that doesn’t care where my G87 was made knowing that BMW QA wouldn’t let their brand tarnish due to assembly in Mexico, or anywhere else?

No. I think it is great it is built in the newest most advanced plant, regardless of location.

Because those who have theories about lower quality don’t understand how the car is made, who makes its parts, etc. as you can see… if they really cared they’d research and learn a bit to understand. But when you don’t care, you don’t care to research at all.

I’ve said it before, this car is higher quality than my German built ones (and not even in the same category as the American made BMW I had, which was by far the worst). Probably due to advancements in manufacturing, so all is the same anywhere. Which is great.

This has been an ongoing debate for some time. I remember when the F30 was being built in South Africa and people perceived it being lower quality. I could not tell any difference between a SA-built F30 and F30's built in Germany.
