Tuning Required for Intake?

Coming from other platforms that require tuning for any engine modifications, I'm curious if either piggyback (Dahler, RaceChipe, JB4, etc.) or unlocked ecu tuning is required on the S58 for engine modifications in order to be safe.

I'm specifically interested aftermarket intakes. I'm not really interested in exhausts yet, although I'm looking at mid-pipes. From what I've gathered so far, based on how the motors are set up, intakes will be fine. Thanks for the info!

I will be honest, I am not AS WELL versed in the S58 as I was on the B58 but for most applications the intake was strictly for induction noise. Even the stock airbox could do a tune without issue. The biggest limiting factor on the B58 was the downpipe so in order to really get a tune going you just replaced the cat with a high flow cat/race pipe and off to the races. (I had an MST intake, AA catted DP, JB4 with custom tune on the my old supra)

All that being said I plan on running an intake (have it in the garage) without a tune/piggyback as soon as I get through the break in period.

Your car does not need to be tuned for intakes or catback exhausts (or lesser exhausts).

This is where there is some disagreement, and not going to argue this as there will be no winners, but if you want to run a highflow catted downpipes or catless downpipes, then you should be tuned

There is no MAF sensor on S58 so no intake specific tuning is required (B58 has it but mostly to check the airflow model plausibility with no effect on fuel trims). Stock Compressor Map values may become a bit too aggressive which would lead to more boost control PID corrections but all of that would be well within acceptable parameters range. An effect of a higher flowing intake will be seen as lower final WGDC value compared to a stock one. However, as DME is targeting torque first the performance with high flow intake would be almost identical to a stock one if you leave the map stock or have a tune that still targets torque - DME would just use less cylinder filling and boost to hit that main torque target.

Probably Dinan or one of the cheaper solutions. Eventuri would be nice but that is just crazy money. Especially since its just a sound mod!

Check out turner. I was looking at the dinan but the tube being what looked like a soft rubber tube didn’t look to me.
The part I was “concerned with” is attached. Maybe it makes a difference maybe it doesn’t but my understanding is the smoother the path the better the airflow to an extent.

Assuming based on your s/n that your other platforms included Subaru STi? I’ve had 3 and still have my 2020. I was surprised people putting parts on the s58 without a tune. Subarus require tune if you do basically any mod.

Good news is if you do a few bolt ons AND a tune, the S58 makes crazy power that would cost like $30k, built motor, big turbo on the STi.

Thankfully this DME is capable of running closed loop for everything (fueling and fuel trimming, ignition, boost, load and torque control), so the compensation logic is capable of handling variance in air and exhaust flow with different mods installed. However, exhaust mods can throw off boost control quite noticeably (e.g. going catless), but with some miles put in the boost and airflow control model gets stable enough again.

+1 Dinan is one of the more reasonably priced carbon intakes

Yeah man, I've had three of them myself! '05, '12, and a '19. The 05 was my favorite (FPGreen) followed by the '19. 100% on the S58. Just a brutal motor stock with so much potential.

I have an FP green on my 2020! flex fuel, big fuel pump, 1600 cc injectors, EWG, ELH on stock RA motor makes 450 whp. It’s a loud angry beast but so much $$$ to get there, with wheels, suspension, etc. More than my M2 cost and doesn’t even have a built motor. It’s for sale but not trying too hard to sell

Love it! Awesome looking cars man.

My '12 and '19's were just Stage 2's. It's funny, my '05 made 400awhp and when I first drove my M2 I knew right away that BMW underrated the power numbers. But you're right, takes so much money to build the EJ motors. Fun process along the way though!

We have an intake coming out that is very similar to the Dinan intake but unlike the dinan you do not have to ruin your factory screw holes on the bottom of the stock intake.
