Managed to scratch the gloss black on 893M wheels with the barrel brush when I was cleaning them.

Does anyone know if they are powder coated or painted and how one might go about repairing them?

Will post pics of damage soon but here’s some pics of the area before the scratches

99% of oem wheels are painted.

Difficult to see what you’ve done to the wheels - might have been an idea to wash them before photographing them.
However, the black parts are painted, the silver parts are diamond cut.
I’d avoid any repair to the diamond cut unless absolutely necessary. Repairs will corrode.

If I were you, I’d get a smart repairer to look at them. Depending on their assessment, and they are very good at sorting problems theses days, I either get a smart repair or leave it. Dirt and brake dust covers a multitude of problems and only you will know.

Finally, ditch any bristled brushed and buy one of these:

And a set of genuine wheel woolies to clean wheels. Also don’t use any “wheel cleaner” you don’t need it if you regularly clean the wheels.

Yeah the photo is before the damage, just trying to highlight the area. The wheel is in the body shop for the diamond cut repair from a curb. Has to be repaired it’s curbed…

They said they laquer it though

Asked him about the black paint and he insists that they are powder coated.

Will upload a clearer picture of the black paint damage, it’s scratches basically. Doesn’t seem to be any metal showing. Might even polish out.


I don’t know how I managed it or how to avoid it again. I rinsed, used iron fallout remover, lathered it, brushed the barrels and the bristles must have rubbed dirt into the wheels.

Dirt and brake dust covers it, as in it will be so dirty I won’t even see it? Cause that’s what I was thinking, might leave it 😂😂

Ask them how long the diamond cut is guaranteed for. Most only guarantee for 3 months. There is a reason for that.

Also, I’m pretty certain the black is paint not powered coat. Powder coat certainly wouldn’t scratch like OEM wheels can and I’m not sure you’d get such a glossy finish. Stand to be corrected tho.

Given your track record, I wouldn’t touch it. Give it to a professional if it really bothers you.

I think I suggested how to avoid it. Soft brush like the ones I quoted, car shampoo and warm water is all you need.

Yeah did all one the above still fucked it up
I’ll see if the detailer can get it out when summer comes.


What would you suggest for diamond cut repair if it’s curbed then? Recut the whole wheel? At this rate I might just buy another wheel

For diamond cut, my philosophy is usually, if the wheel is damaged such that it needs recut, then I would powder coat all 4 wheels.
For 4 wheels will cost about twice the price of a single diamond cut refurb but won’t corrode and next time you curb them, the refurb will be half the price per wheel.

Noted on the soft brush. I did use shampoo though!

Jeeze. Are you cleaning them with a Brillo pad?

I don’t know mate. I’d ask a detailer. Sounds like an expensive thing to do though.

Nope, pre rinse, iron fall out remover, soft mit with soap, finally the auto ID barrel brush. In that order. Must have been poor with the pre rinse and rubbed dirt into it.

That may still be in the clear coat. Start with this, Presta 131932 Ultra Cutting Crème https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00063WGZS...lig_dp_it&th=1 then move on to a polish to finish the correction. If the presta isn't enough, wet sand 1500grit, then presta and polish. This only works if you didn't get through the clear coat.

And you shouldn’t need fall out remover. You’ve only had the car 2 months.

This one's fantastic for doing wheel barrels - even fits between rim and caliper - at this price they're practically disposable too.

I used Alloy Wheel Repair when I barely curbed a wheel here in Florida. They did a good enough job that only someone who knew what they were looking for could find the repair. About $150 USD.
