Sold the C7Z for the G87, so here I am. Is DP, Exhaust, and one of these chip tuners going to net 600whp? Or am I going to need to learn more about what the whole unlocking of the DME thing is and run new turbos? I am asking about dyno proven numbers. Not seeing a lot of that backing the boxes up. Looking to land in-between 600 and 700 on this car, but no more.

With a femto unlock and ecubtune, here are your basic options:

- stock fuel system, intake, highflow catted downpipes, exhaust heat exchanger, oil and trans coolers and colder plugs on 93 octane = ~650whp

- modified fuel system (for E85), intake, highflow catted downpipes, exhaust heat exchanger, oil and trans coolers and colder plugs on E85 = ~700 - 750whp

- upgraded fuel system (pumps, delivery, rails, injectors, manifold, etc.), big turbo, intake, highflow catted downpipes, exhaust heat exchanger, oil and trans coolers and colder plugs on E85 = can get in excess of 1,000whp


The above assumes one has an 8AT.

Of course, there are possible variations within each. I included the extra cooling mods which are recommended for a safest build).

Cars but I just found out that with the Femto unlock, if dealer needs to connect to ECU when in for service or there is an over the air software update, the ECU gets locked again. If I end up going Femto route, need to figure a way to be sure dealer won’t connect but isn’t that necessary sometimes and don’t you want or need to get software updates sometimes?

If you do femto unlock, your days going to the dealership are done.

If you do the unlock, as soon as you hook it up you need to go into your BMW app on your phone and disable the updates (and dont do any manual updates) or its bye bye to the unlock.

Aren’t there updates that are necessary ?

Honestly, not sure about State inspections. I would deder to those in yours or other States that have them.

With higher stage tuning/increasing power comes more heat. Heat is a killer (why using upgraded heat exganger and aftermarket oil and trans coolers are a great benefit). The colder range plugs help transfer the heat faster and prevents pre-ignition.

Is there a best heat exchanger and oil cooler? What about for the manual? I assume I would need a clutch.

Carbahn for the heat exchanger. If their oil cooler and trans cooler are out, those would be my choice. Wagner is also a top choice.

CSF is good but not quite on the same level as Carbahn and Wagner.

Is it just the clutch that’s the weak point with the manual or the entire transmission? A clutch is a a pretty easy upgrade. Also need to figure out how to get some traction with 600-700 whp and RWD.

I don't think I have ever seen data comparing the three options. Let me know what you are using to rank them

I have a mix of Carbahn and CSF (based on availability at the time). The overall quality of the Carbahn (fitment, welds, etc) was far superior to CSF. CSF required some cleanup welding and customized piping (custom machined and bent piece) on one if the coolers to be able to fit and install. The CSF seemed to now be a more mass produced part whereas more personal attention seems to be given by Carbahn and Wagner.

My builder has used all three manufacturers parts on the G80/82/87.
