Motortrend: 718 Cayman GTS vs G87 M2 Comparison

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I've been waiting for this comparison since I placed my order (October) -- having owned (and missed) a Cayman S as well as an E46 M3, I would have disregarded the M2 entirely because my Porsche outshined the M in every way, except practicality.

Watching this made me so happy I didn't make that mistake.

M2 is an impressive car. But it’s only driven in the 3rd gear. 1 and 2 is unusable on the twisties.

Cayman is a naturally aspirated engine with a dual clutch. 1st annd 2nd gear are very enjoyable.

These cars can’t be compared well… they are not in the same league.

It’s because you’re post is now featured as front page news… 🤩

After hitting 155 yesterday in the G&7 I can confirm she’s an absolute beast in many ways

The 718 is one of my favorites, but this new M2 is a huge step up and has impressed me more than I ever expected

Yeah this is a tuff one for me. Love our GTS with an exhaust its on a whole new level for driving experience that NA 4.0 is magic. Currently don't have the new M2 waiting for the CS as much as I can so I filled the gap with a M235 for a fun daily. The two series from BMW is just a wonderful ride kinda a do it all. I enjoyed the video but I don't think the current M2 is fairly compared to the GTS. I have driven the new M2 many times and it does not compare to the GTS when it comes to the feel and handling, just doesn't.

I guess it speaks to how much I have beaten into the algos that I want G87 content. 😆

I'd imagine the GTS 4.0 is a better car in almost every dimension. It better be considering it MSRPs for almost 50% more. I'm hearing the ADM on those right now is in the tens of thousands of dollars, also.

The 2020 GT4 was my dream car for a while. It hurts me that they're not producing it anymore.

I bought the M2 because it's relatively cheap. It's in a class of its own for cost/performance.

Having spent over six years in a Cayman, if I were going to invest six figures, I'd much rather have a base'ish 992.

Thanks for posting. This is a very interesting review on 2 somewhat different sports cars, varied / dissimilar configurations but equally fun to drive. Both would be good and enjoyable. Win win.

Yes, the side profile is smooth and has a great profile, but why did they have to screw up the front and rear so much??

This. If they compared the M2 to the GT4 which is a more realistic comparison given HP of the cars, the GT4 would have that "edge" he's talking about. But when the rubber hits the road you cannot beat the value of an M2 price for performance. A 3800# car is just not going to handle or feel great compared to a 3200# car with a lower center of gravity thats mid-engined, PDK, and NA engine.

Having said all of that I'm seriously looking forward to the arrival of my M2 6MT! I have love for both brands and always "room at the inn" for either.

I’m still on the fence between M2/C8/718S. It’s been a long time since I bought a new car (2009 Miata) and a 718S would be CPO. That’s def playing a role in which way I’m leaning. If I can get individual colors on a 25 M2, that will be the deciding factor (dravit, tanzanite, BRG)

Thanks for posting the video.

I don’t think that’s accurate. Having owned both, I can say it is fair to compare these two as well as the 991.2 Carrera all in the same wheelhouse of German performance vehicles. The 718 is running off a very classic/traditional design language while the M2 takes a new and different approach. You really can’t use all the gears in either car. 2nd in the 718 gets you to nearly 80mph. 3/4 is where both cars are at their best. I think the reviewer comments were very accurate. The 718 drives very composed while the M2 is a little crazy. Power on both is pretty linear although you get more of a gut punch on the M2. I love the size on both. And the updated interior and tech in the M2 is very good. The 718 is more like my old 135is, more analog and back to basics. If you can own both, do it. They are similar but also different at the same time where you won’t get bored of either. Right now I have a 991.2S along with the M2. The 911 is still much quicker but similar to the 718 when you consider the interior and features.

And that says a lot for the M2 since it’s 60-70% of the price of either the 718 GTS or a used 911.

Not any more. MSRP pretty common on a GTS. Porsche market has softened up on these, and new allocations just released this past week.

Do not understand the obsession with 718. After driving several of them one has to go to gt4 rs to get the excitement level that will feel like an upgrade from m2 power.
at double m2 price in that video 110 vs t2 it presents outdated technology, old platform and questionable livability
Here is car and driver complaints on the cayman gts
Still, running up 40,000 miles in 17 months surfaced several annoyances that dented the GTS's daily-driver cred. Just try to find convenient storage space in the cabin for personal items like phones, keys, wallets, and purses. The interior offers only narrow flip-out door pockets, a sliver of space under the center armrest, and tiny behind-the-seat bins inconveniently located by the rear quarter-windows, though there is a normal glovebox. One of our testers thought the brake-pedal feel could be firmer; another found the seat uncomfortable on long drives and rued the absence of adjustable lumbar support. The electric parking-brake actuator button seems to work backward. Some judged the featherlight shifter throws to be a little too video-game-like, though no one complained of missing a shift. The only way to turn off the rev-matching feature in Sport and Sport+ modes is to disable the stability control. Weird.

I’d be buying a PDK S with 350/309 tunable variable vane turbo. After a few years, I’d give it to DeMan to fix the gearing ($8800). Not sure anyone could argue against this platform, cubby for a phone lol. I like the M2 because it’s cheap new ($) and looks punk rock. I’d never consider it if it looked like a F87 evolution. The M2 also wins in the wife is happier sweepstakes as we’d be road-tripping all over the place (LA, tail/nashville, cape cod, Montreal F1) We’re gonna wear this thing out.
