Hey there everybody, my n54 makes a ticking noise at idle, the weird thing is if I Rev my engine and hold it it will tick slightly faster. But when I release the Gas pedal the noise goes away for about 15 seconds after the revs fall back to idle. Then it comes back. I'm assuming this is the DMFW showing wear?

Probably your injectors. When you let off the throttle the injectors shut down. Does it still tick when warm? I had an index 9 injector ticking like crazy when cold but once warmed up it sounded like a normal injector. A cheap mechanics stethoscope will help you isolate which one is causing it.

Or it could be a noisy lifter.

I actually went and got one earlier today. After prodding around a bit the noise is noticeable all around the engine block. But it is much louder near the the bellhousing. I think it's the flywheel for sure now.

could be lifter tick.

I had a louder than normal tick on idle, tends to appear in colder weather.

Took the car for a thrash and it didnt come back until next cold start a few weeks later.

did an oil change, and its not returned at all.

sounded louder towards the gearbox, ie, if I stuck my head under the car, however, its auto box.

I feel like N54 ownership comes with a certain amount of automotive hypochondria mixed with paranoia.
