Manually Shifting the ZF 8 Speed

So just had a shower thought…

Is there a specific way to manually shift this ‘box? My background is the UK and so manual cars. I know how to do that—been doing it years and years.

However, manually shifting an auto is a somewhat new experience. I drive the car 100% in manual/Sport Plus, as I want the manual experience as much as possible. And I KNOW the auto can shift better by itself, and be more economical, but for me, that isn’t the point.

So my question is: does one need to lift off the throttle when upshifting, especially when driving hard? I don’t, as it’s pretty jerky when I have tried. But in a manual car, of course one lifts off when the clutch gets pressed…

Just wanting to get a definitive answer to this to give the ‘box the longest life possible.

Don’t lift off. Foot to floor, flick, flick x8.
The clue is, it’s an automatic gearbox.

Yeah I get that, and that's what I have been doing. Just seems a tad brutal is all

No reason to let off between shifts. I'd argue letting off when shifting may be harder on things than just leaving your foot flat because you're then having the torque converter and clutches engage/disengage at odd times unnecessarily. I'd think the computer programming from factory is well tuned and conservative enough to keep the trans alive a good long while. When you're going flat out, you can feel the car pulls off the throttle a bit between gear changes when you're going absolutely flat out (you can feel some gear change shock), so it's essentially letting off for you, automatically.

Never heard of anyone contemplating lifting when manual shifting an AT (whether a ZF, DCT, Powerglide, TH400, C4, Lenco, etc).

Yep, it's lot of fun flicking up and down, keeping up rpm over 4K.

I find sport plus too jerky in both full auto mode and when in M using the paddles.

I tend to go for Sport only.
