So, my local dealer keeps tempting me with a new M2 and I was wondering if after coming from a G42 M240i xdrive, it would be worth the change. I use the G42 as a daily (it was one of the first UK registered car in March '22 and has done 26k) and in all weathers and am wondering if the the M2 is a genuine 'daily' here in the UK ?
Personally, I don't think its worth an upgrade as the G42 does so many things really well, but the offer I have got seems too good to overlook !

This is EXACTLY why I chose to order a M240, everyone describes the car as the perfect blend of performance and comfort.

In 1979, as a young man, I ordered a '79 Trans Am with the new WS6 handling package, T/A 6.6 motor with the 4 speed. By far the best handling car I've ever had. One of the things I did was take all the rubber body mounts out and replaced them with metal mounts. It definitely improved the handling of the car, but killed the ride quality. At that point in my life, I was fine with that, but now in retirement, I'm looking for comfort 95% of the time. I want to be able to drive cross country without getting beat up, and from what you all have written, that is what the 240 is so good at.

OP, have you been able to drive the M2? When shopping for my car, I was only able to drive a used 240, and that was enough to convince me that it was the right car for me. I saw many comments about how much stiffer the M cars always are so that was never going to be an option for me, even though I'd rather have had a manual box in the car.

Nah, not worth the upgrade. Unless you really want to have a true M car.

But performance and quality wise, you wouldn't be getting much more . You'd actually be losing your AWD

Was in the same predicament as you a few weeks back. I was considering trading in my 22 M240i for an M2, but I'm glad that that I didn't...

I traded my '22 M240i for a '23 M2.

If I had to daily the M2, I probably would have wanted to keep the M240i. I actually did daily the M2 for the first 10k miles, but I ended up picking up a beater in January.

Sucks we can't all just have both.

The primary reason I switched was for the engine. I mod the crap out of these things and the S58 is just better for big power (once you swap the rods). An M240i with the same mods will not make as much power as my M2 does.

Dealer wanted 3k over MSRP...apparently sold for 8K over msrp a few days later. One of the reasons I wanted to trade in was the frozen gray color, but the wifey said it looked like RoboCop, totally killed the vibe for me lol...

I don’t think it is worth the upgrade. The M240i with xdrive is so fast already and the 240 is a lot easier to maintain. My friend had an X3 competition and he got rid of it. He said it was too harsh even in comfort suspension setting to use as a daily.

Doing the same now with the frozen grey. I hate the shifter in the 240. It’s not a daily so stiffness etc. doesn’t matter to me either way. Worth the paint, shifter, quad exhaust, a bit nicer interior trim and the extra horse and torque is a bonus. Is it worth 14-15K more. To me it’s an easy yes.

Have to chime in here. I disagree with the G87 being too harsh for a daily driver.

Here's my story I purchased a pre owned '21 x3 hybrid at local dealer as a second car. My other was '17 f22 m240i. Tastefully modified with Dinan parts, tune, exhaust carbon etc....made it the way I wanted it. However, it was not a true M, no matter how much I did to it or what I added.
There was a '24 ZV blue G87 M2 6MT in the show room that just grabbed me the day I did my deal. Stunning in person.
Fast forward a few days, I return to dealer to pick up stage 1 charger they owed me. There was that G87 at staring at me. Sales associate said the dealership had an "incentive" on all new BMWs including the G87. 5k off MSRP. WHAT??!!
Sold my M240 that day and drove off with the M2. NEVER looked back.
Hands down the most exciting car I have ever driven.

I too always worried about the "harshness" as a daily but I can tell you this is a pleasure to drive even in m2 setting. 6-8 hours highway driving is perfect. Seats are fantastic and supportive and driving position is fabulous. Crappy city roads in M2 settings is stiff. Comfort and M1 setting...all day long for city driving.

The perception of a back breaking, bone rattling ride is very wrong and I am in my 60s.

If you can, get the G87. You won't look back either.

I’ll also offer my perspective. I’ve driven both and no doubt the M240 is a great daily driver. It’s also quick. Arguably just as fast and with AWD a great all-season car.

Now… where I think the M2 is significantly better is in the handling department. The chassis is just sublime and the S58 rewards higher RPM spirited driving.

I own a ‘24 M2 and save for the yoga required to navigate the carbon buckets, it’s a great daily driver.

If I drove less than 5/10’s on mostly straight roads / highway miles Iwould have the M240. Hmmm… I have an M2 and a smile most days.

I have a MY23 G42 M240 rwd and a MY23 G87 M2. Yes, I know the slight benefit of the xdrive over the rwd but regardless, the xdrive would not sway me.I would go for the G87 M2 24/7 365, hands down. No comparison whatsoever (and yes, I daily the G87).

Before I got my G42 I had a F82 comp. Tested a G87 M2, G82 M4 xDrive and a G42 M420i. The G87 and G42 were in typical miserable british weather. Although impressed how much more composed the G87 is over my F82 it still had a lot of issues getting power down in the damp, G42 had no such issues. G82 felt another step above but I just could not make the money side of it work.
After a lot of thinking I went for the G42, kind of fell in love with xDrive. No more getting dropped by Vag hatches on a damp day! it may sound silly but having no option of surround cams on the M2 really put me off it, had them on M4 and the G42 ones had really impressed me.
IMO the G87 is not too harsh to daily. Compared to my F82 which was my daily, the ride is like a dream. Just compared to my G42 it is less comfortable. I think the biggest difference is just overall stiffness, a lot more shaky in G87 but also means the car is a lot more confidence inspiring in the twists.
I would just try and think is the gain for when you want a bit of hoon worth the extra money and the slight reduction in comfort. Also do you ever partake in the traffic light GP on rainy night in slough?
Best advice get yourself in one for abit, my dealer was more than happy for me to have a g82 for a couple days.

My M240i x-drive is my daily.

If the M2 gets x-drive, a fair amount of more horsepower/torque, bests the M240i x-drive to 60 mph by at least 3-4 tenths of a second and has as compliant a ride as the M240i x-drive in comfort mode then that would get my attention.

Until then, the M2 just doesn't have enough of a performance upgrade or have as a compliant a ride over the M240i to be a better performance daily, especially on my poor roads here in PA.

If I was limited to one car I'd be hard pressed to choose between the 230xi or the M2. (Or if I owned a 240i/xi to choose between the 240 and the M2.)

The decision depends upon the type of usage. Bumper to bumper commute, "tight" roads/parking lots, bad roads, winter weather, I think I'd choose the 240.

But with overall good conditions -- northern CA in the Livermore CA/Hayward CA area) -- I've driven a Porsche Turbo even a Dodge Challenger Hellcat on an almost daily basis with no issues other than the pain I experienced at a gas station pump. Oh those CA gas prices... (Just filled up my 230xi yesterday: 91 E10 @ $3.199/gallon at a local Walmart station and I don't get the 10 cents/gallon discount.)

Now I own a 2023 M2 (6-speed) and a 2024 BMW 230xi. The 230xi is my daily driver pretty much because here where I now live, with pretty much all of above unfavorable conditions: Bumper to bumper traffic (I'm retired so there is no work commute), "tight" roads/parking lots, bad roads, winter weather; I daily drive a 2024 BMW 230xi.

But weather permitting and when the mood strikes I drive the M2 sometimes even if it is just to get groceries. The M2 is an absolute wonderful car even with a trunk of Walmart groceries...
