Timing belt noise inside cabin
Hi I just picked up a new g87 m2 (coming from electric so excuse my lack of info here), is it normal to hear the sound of the timing belt inside the car when the engine is on?

Link to engine details: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_B58 Being you are coming from an electric car you might just be hearing -- for the first time in a long time -- normal engine noises a running IC engine makes, a high performance engine. For instance there were posts from new owners about the noise that I think arose from the radiator fan running at an elevated speed at (warm/hot) engine start. My advice would be you have the car in at the dealer and demo the noise and hear what a professional tech has to say. Added: Forgot to mention but of course the engine has other belts, rubber belts, and a variety of hardware associated with these belts. The hardware -- I'm thinking bearings of the idler rollers, tensioner roller -- could be noisy. (Early on with another brand of car it manifested a noise -- "dry" bearing sound -- that proved to be due to the premature failure of an idler roller bearing.) But if there is an abnormal noise I'm sure the tech will pick up on it. Last edited by RockCrusher; 06-07-2024 at 09:46 AM.. Reason: Correct engine mode number... Was B58. S/B S58. |

The Direct-Injection cars are noisier than usual now. Some almost have a diesel sound to them. This may be what you’re hearing.

Here is a better response to the OP, what is the noise you are hearing (what does it sound like)? Maybe post a video if it is loud enough that you think it may be an issue.

Probably best checked with the hood open so you can try to pin down the sound and where it comes from. It sure sounds louder than mine but I think someone with RHD needs to chime in as us LHD folks are on the intake side, not the exhaust. Sure sounds like DI noise to me though.

With your time with an EV I believe you have forgotten how much noise an IC engine can make a healthy IC engine. Lots going on in the engine. There's a reason why the engine has a plastic cover over it. But if you are concerned have the car in and have a tech give a listen. |
