So im considering a brand new M2 in a special colour, either Voodoo Blue or Twilight Purple, or the other option would be a slightly older Porsche 992 S with around 20k miles (probably end up getting it in a boring colour such as guards red or GT silver, as not many individual colours available on the used market)

Which would be feel the special car as a weekend car? Opinions please? Just looking to use for short weekend rides with the Mrs, and two kids in the back aged 6 & 11. Want it to feel special...

Which one would you go for??

Not sure, but be aware those kids are going to grow… and fast.

If you plan on taking short trips to the grocery store on the weekends with them, it will be much more exciting to do the 911. Also, if you go convertible it would be a blast. But those back seats are tiny. I was 13 or 14 and in the back of a 993 coupe for grocery and dinner trips on the weekend. My head was hitting the roof and I could last about 20 minutes. I don’t think the 991 is that much bigger in terms of back seat space.

The 991 will run you more $ out of pocket and likely insurance as well.

I personally would bump up to the m3 or M4 if the kids plan to ride along, or go without the kids and get the 991.

Thanks for the input, its actually the 992 that I am looking at but yes it is cramped back there, although the Mrs is only 5ft so she would be fine back there for a short trip whilst my eldest sits in the front.

But wanted opinions on which one would feel and drive more 'special' the M2 or 992 S or even a 992 T?

Sorry, I have been looking at 991s so my brain went there. It’s also more price comparable if it’s an older 991 PDK.

The 992 S or T would be double the price of the M2. Is it worth it to you? It would definitely feel more special. But then, the price…

Not exacty double if you look at a used 992 s or T with a few miles on it, around only £15-£20k more.

Yes you are right, ive taken a look at both (non LCI M2 of course) and just need to drive them now. I think the 992 would feel more special for longer at this point but i'll have to see as I do like the new colours on the LCI M2

I was considering a 991.1, and back seat safety for kids is what killed the Porsche dream. With no rear head restraints, my kids heads are completely above the rear seat back. Might not be a dealbreaker for you but something to be aware of.

Prices are insane here in the states. Used 992 T are $135-155k and S are $145-190k. M2 as new are $65-80k.

Back seats in either car for the kids won’t be enjoyable about 5 trips. The seats are too small. The new M2 from what I remember are even smaller than the F87. Also, I was able to drive a few 992s (loved the car) but I remember looking at the bqck seats and they were touching the back of the front seats. Mind you, I am 5’8”. I don’t think you kids will enjoy it very much after some time.

Regarding the “special” feel, I have always wanted a Porsche…just couldn’t justify the cost. Financially speaking the M2 is the perfect car for me.

G87 back seats are in a different league to 911s. Not great for adults due to low headroom but for children they are perfectly fine. I'm only 5'9" though so a taller driver may have issues with reduced rear legroom.

I’m right there with you. I even had one on order and the price went up $15k prior to allocation, and I said nah. But I still look almost every day. Prices on the PDK 991 has dropped about $12k or 8%. Some of the 992’s also. How about a Miami blue targa 991.2 PDK for $158k with 6k miles? It’s down from $161! Or how about a $187k 992.1 S? It’s down from $195k! Insane.

One thing though those cars hold their freakin value like no car I have ever seen. I think 3 years straight they raised their new car prices $5k a year because they set a goal of 20% profit margins (i think that is what they stated) and they will get it…people still lining up for allocations.

I had a 991S, sold it and got a amg gt53 4 door for the room. Traded that in for a M2. The back of the M2 is smaller than a GT but larger than a 911.

I have a 2017 991.2S and a 2023 G87 M2. Love them both but if I could only have one, I’d keep the 911.

Very true. Almost every used car is above sticker. There are some exceptions of certain variants.

That said, there are some "hidden" costs that I have to consider. 1) insurance $3k/yr more than my M3, 2) state ad valorem up front taxes - 7%, 3) tires, and 4) maintenance. I figure for all those it would cost me about the same over 4-5 years as my car.

The other issue is I actually drive my car, so putting 40k miles on the 911 would equate to a serious depreciation hit, probably $30k on a $150k 911.

The 911s that hold their value are the ones with low miles or certain variants and collector items like the 911R or 993 manual etc.

I don't know any adults who would fit comfortably in the back of an M2. The OP's 5-yr-old should fit fine, but will probably kick the front seatback. There is no doubt that both the 992 and G87 are both incredible drivers cars..entry cost is far less for the M2 as we know, the beauty of a new G87 remains with a 5 year new car warranty and the S58 engine is a true peach of a motor. Get up early for that Sunday morning drive on a challenging road and both cars will put a smile on your face, just one will do to for far less money. Otherwise, pull the trigger on the 911...as always pleasure cost money and that is what it is.

Agree 100%. I plan on driving my car. What is funny is that if you go to Rennlist they say “these cars are meant to be driven” but when you ask them how much they drive their cars…”3k a year” lol

One question that I can’t get answered honestly is why. If it’s a dream car, why are there 4 owners in 4k miles? Or why are so many 992’s available with 500 miles?

Something doesn’t make sense. Of course, there are a plethora of reasons… but the main reason in my theoretical analysis is because people don’t want to lose money.

But the real reason is actually because it’s a status symbol and not a drivers car, and the idea of owning a 911 is more attractive than driving it. I know guys who that is the exact opposite of their truth, but for the vast majority I think this is a bucket list item instead of an opportunity to drive the car.

And in my same theoretical analysis the secondary reason is lack of driving comfort. I can spend 8 hours in my M and be fine. It’s like when I talk to guys with GT4’s - they can’t stand more than a couple hours in the car.

Regardless I’ll keep dreaming of a 911. Prices are coming down. For real this time. Or maybe not…

The main reason I believe as they mention it all the time is “resale value”. Heck even when they are speccing their cars they ask forum members what options they should include to help resale value. If I am paying M2 money or higher…I am driving the heck out of the car.
