New to BMW

Hello all!

I'm coming from a long line of Mazda ownership (RX7s, Miatas, Mazda 3 Hatches) and decided to shop around for a new car. I ended up going down the rabbit hole of the M2...

My mind is set and will be switching teams as soon as the US site updates to MY25. I'll be heading into a dealership to put in my order and deposit as soon as it does if they happen to be open at that time.

Pretty excited for the change with everything I've been seeing so far albeit a little nervous moving to a platform I know little about.

So, I guess I'm reaching out for any sound advice and any resources worth checking out. I've heard great things about the community so figured I'd stop in and say hello hoping that me not officially owning one yet isn't stepping on any toes.

Thanks for any help and can't wait to be a part of a new community of enthusiasts!

Welcome. M2 is my first BMW coming from 3 Subaru STis ,a Nissan Z and some others over the last 15+ years. Always been a fan of M cars and got the M2 after deciding I wanted an S58 powered M car with a manual transmission.

Welcome from another Mazda enthusiast! Well, use to own some Mazda's but it's been a minute. Honestly just search around these forums and check out the different sections. I creeped on these G87 forums for a while before ordering and getting my car so definitely not stepping on any toes. The two biggest things for me before finally pulling the trigger was hearing from other owners on here and being able to test drive one.

Hey thanks!

I haven't been able to test drive one or really even sit in one.
There aren't any at any dealerships here except for one that's listed for $107K and I refuse to go there because I know I'll be asked to leave after commenting on their insane markup.

I did get to test drive a base 2 series so I have an idea on the size of the interior at least.

Welcome. Hope you get into an M2 soon. I love mine.
I had a mazdaspeed3 once. It was crazy fun with all that torque steer. Had a cx9 which was super reliable. Mazda fan.
I own an NA Miata M 1996. Love to drive it “fast”.

107K? Seriously?

You can get a pretty good sense of how the car drives from the many youtube videos and from forum member feedback. Who knows maybe you run across a member local to you and you could check out their car. Good luck!

Former NA owner here, I traded in an RX8 for my G87, and to say I have no regrets would be an understatement. I would of course recommend you drive one first, maybe a local can hook you up, but I think you'd like it. The G87, while not as millimeter precise in terms of feeling what the tires are doing, is a pretty cohesive driving experience and the power is absolutely addictive. The EPS in the RX8 was honestly not all that great compared to the G87 and pretty much everything else is a huge upgrade. The RX8 was a balanced car and was fun for what it was, but it was another class of car completely, and doesn't in any way compare to the breadth of ability of a G series car.

I owned 2 RX8s many years ago. They were cool, but the BMW M cars are on a completely different level than anything Mazda produces. I've owned 43 cars to-date over 30 years, mostly performance cars . My M2 is one of my favorites. My wife has a '22 X3M Competition, which is also pretty sweet. My weekend fun, fun car is a 2011 Callaway supercharged Carbon Edition Z06 with Z07 track package. It's got ~680 hp, weighs 3200#, and manual 6-speed. I mention that only to say, my M2 is almost as fun to drive as the Z, and has better seats.

Find a pre owned car and drive it before you order a car. It’s very different than our Miatas.

Glad to see all the Mazda people not having any regrets with their M2.

This is what I'm currently driving and I know I'll miss it but having it and the M2 just isn't going to work. Hopefully I'll pick up a first gen Miata just for fun and something to work on for cheap.

Just FYI, your car is a bunch of colors. I used to have an STI but sold it when quoting a job. Then had a manual Mazda 3 so the move to the M2 was a big improvement.

Welcome - I'm coming from Porsche land, but I have owned several BMW's in the past. My M2 just arrived this week, so hopefully I will have it in a few days.

I would suggest looking at grill protection for the radiator and start researching PPF and window tint. I landed on XPEL products. Ultimate PPF and XR Plus tint.

For you Miata to G87 converts, is there anything you miss about the Miata vs the M2?

Welcome to the club and good luck with your future purchase! In your first post you said your mind was set on a 2025 M2, so just curious about what you expect to learn from a test drive?

I'm not saying test drives are a bad idea, but just not sure how useful they are in a car like an M2. How hard can you really drive during a test drive with a car that's not even broken in?

If you just want to sit in one, go see the one that's marked up, and sit in it without making any negative comments on the markup.

I have a deposit down and an order keyed in for a 2025. No test drive needed. I didn't need to test drive an M2 before I bought my 2021 either.

So there aren't any M2's available to test drive in my area currently.

They threw me in a base 2 series more just to get an idea of the size.
I know it's nothing compared to the M2 in terms of feel.

I'm not too worried about what it's going to be like to drive. I'm sure I'll absolutely love it from what I've seen and read. It's nice hearing people coming from the Miata to the M2 and having no regrets so I'm sure I won't either.

If I got to drive one it would just make the wait on my order even worse lol.

Why? He said his mind is already made up to buy one. Do you think he might discover something that would change his mind and turn him away from the M2?

I agree that I didn’t get much out of my test drive. Already was pretty sold on the car in manual and they only had an automatic at local dealership. Since it had not done the break in service couldn’t really push the car nor did the roads allow it. Was nice seeing the inside and seating position but the actual drive didn’t reveal much.

I'm sure I'll miss the way the shifter feels in the Miata but that's stuff that can be easily improved on.

The sheer power difference and thrill of the car will make me overlook the smaller things like that anyways.

There is definitely something to be said for the top down experience that almost had me in a z4 m40i before I pulled the trigger on the G87.
