M240i Weight
Hi all. About to order a M240i. I still own and drive a 2013 335i x drive. I was looking at dimensions to make sure the M240i would fit in the same spot in my garage. Its about same width but a little less length. I was surprised to see ground clearance was an inch more (a good thing in MN). The thing that shocked me though is that the M240i weighs almost 400 pounds more. Where does all that weight come from? Safety? I can't imagine tech packs that kind of weight. Not a big deal to me (other than maybe faster tire wear?). Not going to affect my decision was just curious. Haven't been following the BMW forums for over 10 years now. Thanks!

The added weight comes from everywhere. Safety and tech does have a lot to do with it. Think of all the extra airbags you have, sensors, cameras, wiring to support all of that, among other things. But the brakes are also much larger, the wheels and tires are bigger, heavier seats, heavier engine, more sound dampening materials, etc.
It's just a lot of little things that add up. |

Yea, I just got back from test drive. Loved it. Now I just need to decide if I want a 2024 or 2025. Dealer has one more 2024 starting production later this week he thinks I can still change to whatever color/options I want (as long as I decide in next couple days). I'm leaning towards waiting for 2025. iDrive 8.5 and I think I like the new sportier steering wheel a little better. It would also save a year of depreciation (though I usually keep cars for over 10 years anyways). Price wise I don't think there will be a huge difference. Maybe $500 more MSRP. From what I can tell I should be trying to get $1000-1300 off of MSRP for a 2024. I'm guessing I could still get close to that with a 2025. There is a volume dealer about 100 miles from me so I will also likely send them a request to see where they are at on price for comparison.

As you saw, I think in most day to day uses, this car seems to carry it's weight very well. They way they've tuned the steering, suspension, brakes, powertrain, etc, all hide the bulk. It feels light on it's feet. Probably the place you'd notice the weight would be doing heavy track work, where you'd burn through tires and brakes fast.

I came from a 2013 335i to m240i and overall no complaints. I don’t feel the weight difference at all. The steering does feel different tho, but once I got used to it, I overall enjoy the 240 more.
I ended up getting a 2022, mostly because it was immediately available, but also because it has round analog gauges, a shifter and I ended up paying almost 12k less than new ( car only had 1,200 miles). 23, 24, 25 are mostly all the same, personally I’d get the best used deal. |

To the OP, just a suggestion if you decide to go with a '24: I ordered mine about this time last year and I ordered a '23 MY. Got the quote from the dealer and hammered out the out the door price before I gave them my deposit. I think late July and early August is when they start changing over the production lines to the next MY so when I finally got an allocation and production started, it was for a '24 MY. No complaints here except that the price for the '24 with the options I had selected came to about $1500 more than the '23. My dealer of course didn't tell me anything and when I went to pick up the car, they wanted that extra $1500. I said no and was almost at the point of walking out but I did demand my deposit back. They wanted to haggle and I wound up paying about $500 more than we agreed for the '23. Just be aware of this and you might be able to deal with it upfront rather than get surprised like me at pickup time. The entire fiasco was the dealer's fault and since this was my first Bimmer, was a pretty bad first impression. On the positive side, so far after almost 8 months of ownership, I still am very happy with the car.
