Rear bumper cover removal/install (Pic heavy)
Picked up my new rear bumper cover from the body shop today & installed it when I got home. It's actually very easy to remove the rear bumper cover, here's what you'll need:
Jack & jack stands 17mm socket to remove wheels & torque wrench 10mm socket with ratchet or screw driver with socket attachment T-20 torx bit Plastic trim tool 1. Loosen lug bolts, raise rear of vehicle, place jack stands under rear jack pads, remove rear wheels/tires. 2. Remove rear fender liners. (4) 10mm screws & (10) 10mm plastic nuts. 3. Remove (1) t-20 silver screw that attaches bumper cover to fender. 4. Remove (6) 10mm screws that attach bottom of bumper cover to the car. Two each side behind the tires & 1 each side next to the exhaust tips (pictured). 5. Open trunk and remove weather stripping around the bottom & sides of the opening. 6. Remove 1 push pin each side in the black plastic trim piece above the tail light. Remove trim piece exposing a 10mm screw (pictured). 7. Unclip rear diffuser between the exhaust tips. You will see (2) 10mm screws, do not remove these. 8. Gently pull bumper cover away from the vehicle being careful not to break any tabs. Disconnect large wire harness below passenger tail light (pictured). Bumper cover should be completely free from the vehicle. 9. Remove parking sensors, unclip wire harness, unclip reflectors, unclip rear diffuser panel * if transferring to new bumper. If just replacing parts, remove the necessary parts & replace. To re-install, just reverse the process. Line all the tabs up with the corresponding clips and press back together. The only issue I have is with this flat tab at the top center of the new bumper that is supposed to clip in dead center below the trunk opening. The new bumper cover seems warped just a little bit so that tab isn't staying put. I'll figure out a fix for it. It is 98 degrees today with a "feels like" temp of 103. It was over 110 degrees in my garage and total time to remove the damaged bumper cover, transfer all the parking sensors, reflectors, and rear diffuser to the new bumper cover, and install the new cover was 1 hour & 20 min. For anyone wondering. Total cost for my bonehead backing into my son's Jeep was $1,272 ($551 for the bumper & $721 to have it painted).

Some JackS backed into my bumper in a parking lot last Saturday and took off. I’m trying to have a body shop take a look at the damage these couple of days to determine if only repair and repaint is needed, otherwise I may go with your route as well. Shame this happened just 2 weeks after I finished break-in… hopefully they can match the paint as well as yours.

This is quality content.
A+ How does the paint match? Most body shops would have recommended blending into the rear quarters, which gives me anxiety just thinking about it, so I understand why you didn't go that route. |

I've had many parts painted off the vehicle. A hood on two different vehicles, three spoilers, this bumper. All 3 vehicles had metallic paint as well. I always use a shop that uses a color correct camera and who does multiple spray outs to get right instead of blending other panels. I pay probably a little more, but the results are worth it. |

Thanks! Hopefully it can save someone several hundred dollars if they need to remove the bumper for any reason instead of paying a shop to do it.
