HUD worth it?
Submitted my ZF8 MY25 build n got my build number.
The GM very strongly encouraged me to get the HUD ($1,100 option). I didn’t originally have it optioned as I didn’t much see the need for it. Well, now it’s in the build, but I can still yank it out. He said resale would be impacted if I didn’t option it. That kinda sounded like BS to me. I’m thinking 10 cents on the dollar for most all of those options is what we hope for. Anyway, I know this has been probably discussed a lot, but how many of you went with the HUD on your G87s? Would you spend the money again? Would you drop it if you could do it over and save the $1,100? What exactly is the “M specific content”the Live Cockpit Pro with Head-up Display option talks about? EDIT: found this thread and it talks about the HUD not working well with polarized shades - those are all I wear. This is sounding like a no-go if the tilt trick doesn’t work. https://g87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1965432

I totally think it's worth it. It is unobtrusive, but it's there when you need it & you don't have to move your eyes from the road to see speed & nav directions. And it changes with M1/M2 modes.
I wish it wasn't an $1100 option, but I am glad I picked it. It also kind-of adds to the luxury feel of the car. If you can swing, I say go for it!

Never had it before but will never order another car without it.
I wouldn’t categorize it as a gimmick. For me, it’s a very useful option. Good luck. |

I added it on my order, personally I love it although I’ve never lived with a car that has it, but I experience it on a daily basis at work.
I don’t think it’s a gimmick at all, that doesn’t mean you will like it, but it is absolutely a functional item and serves a purpose which many people use and appreciate. If you want to talk about gimmicks, then we can discuss gesture control lol |

It’s probably saved me a number of speeding tickets as your current speed and speed limit are displayed simultaneously. I see the large difference between them far too often.
The available sport, entertainment, and navigation displays are icing on the cake. |

Looking at my car's options it appears HUD comes with the Live Cockpit Pro option package. And this includes NAV.
If so if you decline HUD you may also not get NAV. Best advice I can offer is to check and be sure if you elect to drop HUD you don't drop something you really want. As for HUD.....Meh. I'm so used to looking at the dash that HUD doesn't do all that much for me. I bought my car off the dealer showroom and it came with what it came with. If I was ordering a car I'd give HUD a miss unless it meant -- just saying -- no NAV too. I do wear polarized sunglasses and the HUD display is affected by these lenses. I tweaked the HUD settings and I can see the HUD display. A bit faint/dim maybe but that suits me as I really don't use HUD. If you wear glasses with polarized lenses you might want to sit in a car with HUD and see if you can adjust its display to suit you. |

Personally I see it as a gimmick. Seemed rad at first but now I mostly don’t even notice it

I can deal with dimmer, I can’t deal with it disappearing and changing brightness with every slight head movement - that’d drive me bonkers.

This right here is one of the main reasons I thought it might be nice to have.
I got a 117mph (she gave me the lowest of the 3 she clocked me at) in a 45mph zone ticket in my last twin-turbo Bimmer and so I need some “help” in this area. Obviously a HUD wouldn’t have done anything for me in that particular instance. But on my limited test drives, the G87 seemed a bit deceiving in how fast I was going. Puttering around, I looked down and was shocked at how fast I was actually going. Effortless.

I like it even if I wear polirized sunglasses. As others mentioned, it dims a lot depending on the polarization. The adjustment helps a little bit here. At first I would change the brightness setting depending on the sunglasses (which it was a pain) but with time I have learned to have only one setting and go. Great to quickly see the speed and the display of turns and directions… but it can be too much map in certain configuration (at least for me).

BMW does this a lot, another example on some models like X5/6/7 is “heated front seats, armrests, and steering wheel” even though heated front seats are standard. The $1,100 option for HUD literally just adds HUD and nothing else. |

Does the gear indicator on the HUD update as soon as the stick is moved, before you let the clutch out?
This will be my first manual and I am mildly terrified of money shifting it so I'll be taking it real easy for a while |

I honestly wouldn't buy a new vehicle without HUD. I much prefer keeping my eyes on the road in front of me than having to glance down at the gauges.

One thing to keep in mind with the HUD is that the windshield they use is not normal and if you need a replacement you will need to pay more for special auto-glass compatible with the HUD, something in the range of ~$1000 at least I think
That said, I wear polarized (Goodr) during day driving and I would still option the HUD. It makes the car feel more special and during night driving I actually like it a lot. |

FWIW, in my experience money shifting doesn't happen when you are new to MTs. Your natural hesitation will prevent it. It's when you are comfortable and start shifting fast without thinking, that's when you are more likely to make a bad shift. (Or if you are are slam shifting as fast as you can because that's how they do it in movies. Don't do that lol. Real racing is about being smooth.) |
