Woodcliff Lake, NJ – July 2, 2024… BMW of North America today reported Q2 2024 sales results for the BMW and MINI brands in the U.S.

BMW Brand.

In the second quarter of 2024, BMW brand sales in the U.S. totaled 91,237 vehicles, a 3.7% increase from the 87,948 vehicles sold in the second quarter of 2023.

“The past few weeks have been challenging for everyone in the industry, however, I’m pleased to report a positive result for the second quarter,” said Sebastian Mackensen, President & CEO, BMW of North America. “Our dealers are a resilient and resourceful group who have worked hard to manage the situation and set us up for a successful second half of the year.”

BMW Electric Vehicle Sales.

BMW offers four fully electric models in the U.S. – the BMW i4, BMW i5, and BMW i7 Sedans, and the BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle. In the second quarter of 2024, the company sold 14,081 electric vehicles, which represents a 23.8% increase vs the same quarter last year and approximately 15.4% of total U.S. sales.

The BMW electrified lineup also includes four plug-in hybrid electric models: the BMW X5 xDrive50e, BMW 330e, BMW 750e and BMW XM. The plug-in hybrid electric BMW 550e will begin arriving in showrooms towards the end of this year.

MINI Brand.

MINI sales in the U.S. totaled 5,898 vehicles in the second quarter of 2024, a decrease of 22% vs the 7,585 vehicles sold in the second quarter of 2023.

MINI sales volume continues to be impacted by the planned model changeover as the brand begins the launch of its entirely new product portfolio this year. This includes a full range of all-new MINI Countryman and Cooper models, which have just begun to arrive at U.S. dealerships.

The sales reported in today’s figures are of BMW passenger cars and light trucks, as well as MINI passenger cars. Consistent with auto industry practice in the U.S., BMW of North America follows the U.S. Auto Industry Sales Release Schedule issued annually by Motor Intelligence for purposes of reporting sales of BMW passenger cars and light trucks and MINI passenger cars. As a result, the sales of BMW passenger cars and light trucks and MINI passenger cars reflected in today’s Q2 2024 report occurred between April 2, 2024 and July 1, 2024.

Here before people start to shit on the XM for having no sales.

The XM sold more in 2023 alone than the Urus has since 2018 till now

Hurts to see BMW throwing electric cars down peoples throats. After working in the dealership for over a year from 2022-2023 the shift to electric car production is crazy. So many electric cars piling up on lots and extreme incentives to sell is the only thing fueling the growth. Long live ICE cars 🏎️

This was always going to be the case. Electric range only takes you so far until other manufacturers come out with car that offer a lot more. Range anxiety continues to be a consideration, but it's not that big of a factor anymore. I don't see Tesla evolving their vehicles that much to offer better build and quality, at least not to the level of the BMW/Audi/Mercedes, for example, but the German OEM's will continue to evolve with battery tech and add the ability to use Tesla chargers, there is more of a compelling case to buy German over a relatively poor quality Tesla with more range.

Just my $0.02.

In 2023 lamborghini sold 1761 urus' worldwide. For the XM, 2315 was just US sales. US would have about 25% market share worldwide which means 9000-10000 XMs were sold worldwide in 2023. This means that in its first year alone XM outsold urus worldwide even though they have been making the urus since 2018.

It took Mercedes 10 years to sell more G wagon units per year than what BMW did for XM sales in the US in their first year.

Annual XM sales are also higher than Porsche cayenne turbo GT, Aston martin DBX, Ferrari purosangue, Audi RSQ8, Maserati levante trofeo, etc etc.

Very interesting, so because they sit on dealer lots in the US just means they are allocating too many to US market then. The dealer I worked at sat on the same two for 6+ months each. The dealer I now work close to (different then previous employer) has had 2 sitting for over a year.

Even where I live, Romania, the XM is the most sold M car.
Also the XM is the most sold Exotic car in Europe - From BMW Blog :

"Preliminary figures show the plug-in hybrid SUV was purchased 3,133 times last year on the Old Continent. It eclipsed other high-end SUVs such as the Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga, which finished second with 1,908 sales and third with 1,325 sales, respectively. Another expensive sport utility vehicle made it to the top 10, with the Aston Martin DBX finishing sixth with 991 units."

The US market grew 3.5% in the first 5 months - with BMW at half the growth (and clearly the mix is moving to lower priced models, not just with BMW but across the board), perhaps it’s time to offer better financing and leasing rates, promotional discounts and cut prices on models like the iX and XM (in lieu of massive discounts). I also wonder how the new X3 will be received.

Down vote for what?? I worked at the dealer and saw it everyday😭 why would you buy an x5 when you can get 17k off an iX with a sub 3% rate and free charging for 2 years. X5 is higher interest rate and you need to fill it up with gas (increased cost) . Im confused by what you mean

Looks like people love the new X2 redesign - up 934% YoY.

Strong results for electric lineup - 15% of U.S. sales - good to see.

That was exactly the deal I got for the iX. But we also have an X7. I think for BEV it’s both/and. But you make a good point. The iX is simply overpriced. As I stated in an earlier post, the X5/6/7 in particular needs some favorable interest rates - just noticed the rates are now 3.99%. I suppose they already have made a move in that regard… not sure when that happened.
