Damage on collection - advice needed please

Hi All,

I recently picked up a new g87 m2, upon collecting the car at the showroom, the dealer pointed out to me a deep scratch/dent in the passenger sideskirt. They said they would arrange for the damage to be repaired at the bodyshop and would give me a loan car while the m2 was in for work. So I thought OK fine at least they will fix it. But then I drove home after collecting the car and noticed the driver side plastic door panel was cracked. Dealer has agreed to replace the plastic trim.

Car is currently in the bodyshop for the sideskirt repair, but for the plastic trim I've now been told it's on back order and no timeframe for delivery.

What do i do here?

I’d be more concerned why the plastic inside is cracked. Did they have to open it up for some reason?

Not sure why the comment had to get personal. Also, he said “serious discount” which is much different than asking for a discount or some other form of compensation… Which in this case would be understandable.

I wouldn’t buy this car without a serious discount as another posted stated. You have the leverage here. They delivered the car with damage and you have no reason to pick it up other than that you like it. They know no other buyer will get it because all things being equal why would they pick a damaged car over a non-damaged one. The repairs will be on the car’s record and affect its future value. I’d ask for at least $10,000 off.

If the OP walks the dealer will fix the damage and will sell the car to the next buyer. Guessing minor damage like that might not be disclosed either. I don't know much leverage this person has. Heck, my car could have been damaged in transport and then repaired. I have no idea

There is 0% chance you would get anywhere close to $10k for something like this. Damage in transport happens all the time, and is often fixed before it even arrives at the dealer.

Well, that’s what I would ask for—they may refuse and a negotiation may ensue.

$10,000 accounts for the loss in resale value when this gets disclosed and the inconvenience of selling a vehicle damaged in transport in my mind. The carrier and dealer could split that cost or one of them can eat it.

If the dealer has another willing buyer, then this won’t work, but if they do not I can see them being willing to discount the car to the price they purchased it for, which is probably $15-35K under MSRP depending on spec.

You do whatever you're most comfortable with.

If you haven't signed yet, then you can still walk away. If you've signed then your options are much more limited, as is your ability to negotiate.

My sideskirt was damaged in a similar way in a similar spot. I was furious at first, but I can't even tell where the damage was anymore, and I don't ever think about it.

If I were in your shoes I would not sign anything until I saw the repair, and I would tell the dealer that I'd only be willing to take delivery and purchase if I was happy with the final result.

The interior damage doesn't bother me as much, so I'd just wait for the part to come in.

Shit happens during transport. This isn't unique to your situation. A car exchanges many hands before it gets to its owner.

I'm impressed the dealer pointed out the damage to you. Pretty sure my dealer would have hoped i didn't notice and let me drive off with the car.

I had damage done to my car too, some likely during PDI including fine swirls and a scratched up door trim. Other issues with stone chip on one headlight that was likely during transport. scratches on the bumper gloss trim...

I was also furious, and i had paid extra for a proper ceramic and paint prep to be done at the PDI. but end of the day, they agreed to fix the issues and although the protocols at their new car delivery and aftersales divisions leave much to be desired - i dont think its worth the time trying to push for financial compensation. I'd rather enjoy the car and get whatever has to be fixed, fixed.

As long as they repair the car properly, i dont forsee any impact on future value. Although it is shocking, the service standards our dealer here provides at the price point (>USD350k). Really shoddy PDI.

The OP is not entitled to a discount. He's entitled to have the parts fixed/replaced, which his dealer is doing. The inside plastic piece is not a structural component, it's not a safety component, so when the dealer gets the part, they'll replace it. Really not a big deal.

If you don’t ask about a discount they won’t give you one. I for one wouldn’t not be thrilled and would have a hard time hiding that fact.

It’s not unreasonable to ask for $100?, $200?, towards in house swag or BMW parts basically for the inconvenience.

Don’t know what the law is but I suspect it’s little more than delivering the car in a condition acceptable to you.

A liitle generosity on their part goes a long way though. A few hundred dollars might result in a return customer and/or positive word of mouth.

IMO

Vehicles are delivered damaged all the time. Sometimes dealers fix them before they are sold, sometimes they wait for parts to arrive but deliver the vehicle. And sometimes they say sorry about your bad luck.

The brand new '23 Grand Cherokee Summit my wife ordered was delivered with several scratches in two doors, and paint chips on 3 wheels. The dealer fixed the scratches before we picked it up (after letting us know), but Jeep (Stellantis) refused to fix the wheels. They were also optional wheels we paid $2k extra for, they said too bad. Said that's the risk with shipping the vehicles. The fact is shipping damage does not fall under "defects in materials or workmanship", so shouldn't even be covered under warranty. The OP should be happy his dealer acknowledged the damage and offered to fix it free of charge, plus give him a loaner.

Do you guys ask for something extra every time your vehicle needs warranty work?

Sorry, can’t give the dealer the benefit the doubt. Gee thanks for telling me my car I spent 70K+ is damaged and we will fix it, but you will have to wait and we will figure it out. No repeat business concerns? These guys love their surveys, so they want to get absolutely hammered there? Not too much to give to make this right.

What are you options in the UK. That legally is different than the US market or Germany here. Personally I applaud the dealer for disclosing but Id not accept until both damaged area's are addressed and you are happy. Sure damage happens in transit but not the majority are damaged.

Irrelevant comparison.
When the car is in for warranty work, it’s already been delivered to the owner in acceptable condition.
Nice try.
