No 4th of July video?

I was looking forward to this "BMW has a surprise for you" but haven't seen it.

Wasn’t as an important event to BMW as Canada Day, when they put out that video to us Canucks.

They must alternate the development team's focus every year, since the "B.S. fund" must be limited.

BMW, if you're listening, move the B.S. budget to the "Analog Displays" project. Thank you.
Too bad all the G87s on the road already have obsolete iDrive units. We will be lucky to get any updates beyond critical patches, let alone new features.

It's not like the car is going to stop working.

My i4 was obsolete when I got it as the ones coming out a month later got a new shifter and 4 months later got 8.5 and new hardware.

My issue with it is that car manufactures are pushing the all screen tablet experience on us, boasting about all the new "tech" available in their cars. It obviously saves them money versus the old way of doing things. I don't think it's much to ask to not have a brand new car have out of date infotainment hardware/software less than a year into it's release.

Idk why this area is such a struggle. We are only just now getting to the point where (some of) these systems aren't laggy garbage, despite smart phones/tablets being at the level where even 3-4 year devices are still getting updates and run smoothly.

Anyway that's my ranting over, getting too off topic here anyway lol

I think you miss that the development cycle for cars is a long cycle.

The hardware change from Intel Atom to Qualcomm ARM was a long time in the making. If they wanted to release a car, they had to release with what was available. Since Intel Atom was not being upgraded they had no choice but to shift to ARM.

Somebody is going to get a car as the cycle changes and that last car is going to be obsolete when it ships.

BMW is in the business to make money and most people paying attention knew that 8.0 would not be upgraded to 8.5. It wasn't even a secret. I knew when my car delivered in March of 2023 that I was not getting 8.5 and that my head I it could not be upgraded.

That being said. I haven't seen any feature in 8.5 that matters other than the new head unit is a different processor.

If they had called it 8.0 ARM would it have mattered?

My 8.0 car still functions perfectly fine.
Maybe since I work in the computer field I just can't get worked up over this.

To my point.

I have never bought a car based on the version of infotainment system.
