Smoking G87 - Actually Smoking
Brand new Black G87 Bat Mobile delivered this week. First few hundred miles running in and there's a lot of oil smoke coming from the car. BMW says this is due to oil based wax burning off the engine exhaust etc.. it was delivered with only 12 miles on the clock. Anyone else heard of this???? or on any other M models??

Smoking G87
Its basically coming from everywhere, when you stop out of the bonnet and rear, and when I was going down the motorway had a couple of people flash me because of it. its a light smoke not like black carbon. It smells oily as well.

The prolonged smoking suggests an oil leak that is dripping oil onto a hot exhaust manifold. I had this problem with a new '96 Mustang GT. A valve cover gasket/seal was bad and let oil leak (slow drip) down on the exhaust. In the case of this car the leak wasn't bad enough to generate smoke while moving but when I stopped at a light a bit of oil smoke/vapor wafted out from the engine compartment. And the cabin smelled of hot oil as the cabin ventilation system ingested this vapor. With the engine hot, the A/C off, and the hood open, let the engine idle and look for oil vapor. Then shut off the engine and look. |

Think the reason is these cars can sit for awhile close to salt water awaiting shipment -- via ship -- to distant markets. The cosmoline affords some protection against attack by salt air. |
