PSA: Clutch pedal releases parking brake
I don't know why they would design the car this way, but if the engine is running and you depress the clutch pedal, it will release the parking brake. I learned this the hard way. I was sitting in my car in a parking lot. I was about to leave so I depressed the clutch, but I remembered I needed to get my umbrella out of the trunk. Got out of the car and it started rolling. Luckily I stopped it before it hit anything.
At first I thought I must have done it, but I tested it out and sure enough, pressing the clutch pedal releases the parking brake. Edit to point out this only happens if your for is off the brake. |

The only time my parking brake is released automatically is when I clutch in and give it gas. Interesting that yours is releasing when only clutching in.

This really has me perplexed. Just another data point, doesn't happen with the door open

Scary! Sad that they didn't bother giving the M models a physical handbrake.

Mine does not do that. Might be a glitch with yours.

Mine doesn't do it. However I can release the park brake by pressing the switch when the clutch is pressed.
So, checkout if your PB switch is faulty? Stuck close? There should be fault logged if there is such failure. Another possible reason could be that your gear position indicator is faulty? Does it show N on the screen when the gear lever is neutral? Another thing could be your changed some settings with Bimmercode? https://streamable.com/a63rsh |

Couldn’t replicate on my car, no auto disengagement of the parking brake until the clutch is on the way up with a gear engaged and throttle is applied.
Perhaps if the clutch isn’t pressed all the way down before release, a faulty clutch position sensor, faulty gear position sensor or less than full clutch motion due to a clutch stop, may modify the behaviour? |

Can't replicate this on my car at all. Depressing the clutch should not release the parking brake. Pressing the gas will.

Similarly, I cannot duplicate this by just pressing in the clutch.

Thanks for all of the responses guys. I reset my bimmercode settings and everything was the same.
I'm going to take this thread with me when I go in to have my 10,000 mile service done in a few weeks. |

Makes me think there is something up with the throttle position sensor.
The right answer is let the dealer fool with it as it is definitely something screwy that will require a new part. Be prepared to wait for it though. Please let us know what they have to say.
