What have you guys done to get more of a deep rumble out of your g87? Looking for an exhaust that changes the tone more than the volume.

If the answer is a combination of things, I’m willing to do that too.

Step 1. Get an engine hoist
Step 2. Remove the S58 from the engine bay
Step 3. Buy a 7.0 liter 427.8 cubic inch V8
Step 4. Place LS7 in engine bay

Start with a mid-pipe. I recommend a single or equal-length mid-pipe. No matter what mid-pipe you choose, it will deepen the exhaust's tone because it replaces the OEM secondary cats.

Single mids will produce a more rasp-free and clean note. Equal-length mids have more rasp but produce a crisp, exotic tone higher in the RPMs.

Here are some of the more popular options:

Valtronic, Active Autowerke, MAD, etc. have great single mids.

Valvetronic's equal-length is a combination of equal-length and single, offering the best of both worlds, IMO.

Active Autowerke equal-length is a true equal-length with an x-pipe.

Evolution Racewerks sells a straight mid which doesn't do anything fancy to the exhaust note like single or EL does. However, it will increase volume and lower the tone.

There are a lot of other reputable companies providing mid-pipes, too. I just gave my recommendations

Single midpipe will help raise the volume and add a deeper tone.

Are there any other pros and cons having a single midpipe vs an equal length? This is my first M car so I don’t know if I should get just a midpipe or go for a full exhaust (like AWE for example).

If you are looking for that true V8 high hp/big block rumble, you aren't going to get it. Period. You can improve the sound with different exhaust setups and valve controller (to rum valves open) but it's still an inline 6 so any sound you get will be only what an inline 6 can produce. One word to the wise (and you may already know this), sray away from titanium exhausts.

Right on - appreciate it. I’m coming from a CT4V Blackwing and multiple mustangs/camaros before that, so while I like the sound quite a bit, I wouldn’t mind about 25% more volume in loud mode and some more burbles. I always want to stay away from a raspy or obnoxious exhaust, I just want to dial it up a little more.

The complete exhaust will make you sound better, and that's always the best option.

The single midpipe provides the cleanest tone; the equal length is more aggressive but has an added rasp.

From my experience, most customers prefer the sound of the single.

A single midpipe will provide a deeper sound and a smoother exhaust path. Our midpipe will also allow you to install a midpipe first and add a axle back of your choice later on. Awe uses a different piping diameter and cut point so that would not be possible with their system.

For reference I'm running MAD catless DP, Active Autowerke equal-length midpipe, and M performance exhaust and its a bit raspy. Its more noticeable on the low end.

That is definitely a raspy setup if rasp is an issue, it can easily be fixed by switching the downpipe or midpipe

One thing I do miss is the sound of a V8, my E92 M3 and my S550 Mustang. Unfortunately you will never get the same sound of a Turbocharged Inline 6. I feel catless DPs and wide open exhausts on these cars don't sound that good. I will probably just do a Dinan mid pipe and call it a day

Yeah the f90 m5 would be a better comparison if that is the sound you are after.

I already own the M2. Sold the Stang. I am interested in your midoipe with the resonator. I wish you guys would put a sound clip together.

Also a normally aspirated or Supercharged V8 will always sound better than a Turbocharged one. Don't have those snails blocking the exhaust pulses.

Yes like your resonated single midpipe. Which btw your photos got it backwards. The resonated one is shown for the non resonated and vice versa. Just an FYI.

I did the Dinan X midpipe (deletes both resonators, retains secondary cats) and the MAD axle-back exhaust. I am extremely happy with the sound - great combo of (reasonable) increased volume and a MUCH deeper exhaust note.

Burbles sound incredible & the crackles are louder. No annoying "BRAAP!" sound & no drone whatsoever. Fit & finish of both parts are top notch. Tips are really nice, too. See my post for video clips & pics.

I also have the SST valve controller so I can open the valves 100% - this actually does affect the sound vs OEM, too.

If you're anywhere near Hartford CT, PM me & we can meet up so you can hear it.

Has anyone tried the Milltek single midpipe with their x pipe combo? From the one video I’ve seen online with that setup (I believe it was from auto id) it sounds like one of the least raspy, cleanest exhaust notes I’ve heard on these cars. Can anyone verify?
