Long warm up times on oil temp
Having owned a G42 with the B58 and an F15 with a N57, both vehicles can reach operating oil temperature with 5 miles of operation at or near highway speeds.
My G87 takes 3 times the distance to reach operating temp. I am aware the car has more oil volume and significantly more cooling capacity. Also without active vents like the G42, the airflow into the front sections is open, so cooling takes place regardless of whether the engine requires it. I wanted to make sure this is normal operation; that oil warmup takes so long for everyone. I know modern engines attempt to reach operating temperature as quickly as possible for emissions and efficiency, and its been drastically different with the G87 versus my other 2 BMWs. Thanks!

Does take a bit of time to warm up, seems about 1-2 mins longer than my e90 M3 or 4.0L GT4 to get to optimal temp. Can’t remember what my M2C was but it was probably similar to the G87. Seems normal, my temp settles just above half way.

Because of this I always hold off any spirited driving until the oil temperature reaches normal operating temperature which is around 212F. See pic. (Also, you can query the car for the oil temperature. Think the command is: "Hey BMW. What is the engine oil temperature?".) Added: I forgot to mention I first encountered a slow to warm up engine -- at least its oil -- with my 2018 Hellcat. Not even a half a mile to the freeway and even in 10 miles of freeway driving at 65mph the engine oil was not yet even up to 200F. However, the same car when started after work -- and having >8 hours to cool down -- when I drove it on surface streets -- 35mph -- the engine oil temperature would be up to 212F (or higher) even on mild days, make that mild nights because by the time I left the office it was night time. Two pics below which show the engine oil temperature/coolant temperature after some freeway driving from a cold start then a pic showing same after ~5 miles of surface street driving. Now with my M2 I'm 5 miles away from the nearest freeway on ramp and freeway usage is seldom used nowadays. The other day I had the M2 out and paid particular attention to the oil temperature and by the time I reached my destination -- not the freeway but a bookstore -- just a bit over 5 miles of city street driving primarily at 45mph the engine oil temperature was up to temperature.
