Reactions to my G87

So I kept my purchase under tight wraps. As much as the anticipation was burning I didn’t want to tell anyone and risk having someone talk me out of it. It’s one of the most expensive purchases I’ve made and living in NYC it’s definitely not practical. I knew all that before going in. Told my brother and that’s it. We spend the next months waiting and looking at mods, wheels, aero, everything. I think we watched every G87 video on YouTube at this point.

So the day comes. My brothers with me to receive the car, it’s stunning. He’s more over the moon than even I am. I fill out the paperwork and drive to my parents house. I flash the keys to my dad, he assumes it’s a loaner, runs outside to see the car in all it’s glory and he has this big smile on his face. He couldn’t believe it and he’s more excited and proud of me than I could have imagined, he hops in the drivers seat and takes it for a ride. Even happier than I opted for the 6MT. Constantly telling me how great of a car it is.

My dads all about practicality, and discipline. He has his own toys but the fact that he can go from driving his E63 M6 and prefer the G87 and compliment me on it felt relaxing and far from the reaction I expected. It brought us together and was a nice bonding experience for us. He’s even considering putting an order in. We’ll see about that.

Something about keeping it a secret for fear of scrutiny and then recieving such warm reactions from family made it feel so much more special.

I’m wondering if anyone else had a similar reaction from family and friends.

Great story. My dad was like that too. Always about practicality. Growing up we had a minivan…why? Because my grandparents lived with us and it was easier for them to get in and out. My dad never purchased anything for fun or enjoyment. If he was still with me, I think he would be happy seeing my up coming M2 because I think he would look at it as his sacrifices put me in a position to be able to make “fun” or “enjoyable” purchase.

I am happy for you and that was a great story!!

Yes - in a similar situation right now, and have been in the past.
Lost Dad earlier this year, so not exactly the same. But friends, coworkers, Mom etc - same.

I thought I was going to keep it a secret from the wife too, but she sniffed it out, and surprisingly wanted to be part of getting “our” new car.

I was thinking “What’s this “our” nonsense..”

I was raised by my grandmother who has named me her favorite of all of her children lol.

She’s always been on me about finances and just wants the best for me in life, constantly on me about making good choices and saving so I can have a happy future.

I told her the moment I walked out of the dealership that I put a deposit down on a car then sent her pics and some info on it.

She was very excited and said I deserve this for myself, she then went into a long story telling me that she’s the reason why I get speeding tickets and love cars. She’s had a wide range of cars over her years.
80’s Celica, 914, 924, 944 Porsches. 240, 260, 280 Zs. She recently turned 80 and still cruises around in her 2008 Bullitt edition mustang and chuckles every time she sets off someone’s alarm when driving by.

So now I get her asking every day if I’ve got an update on my order making the waiting process feel like it’s taking even longer lol

Man, these are great stories and kind of makes you realize that regardless of our backgrounds we all have some pretty awesome similar experiences. Who would have thoughts this coming out of a car forum.

Wow man. That’s exactly what must have been going through his head. I can only imagine the pride he felt seeing me with my dream car knowing that all his hard work led to my own happiness. It’s a beautiful thing. And I’m happy I got to share it with you all. And knowing that I’m not the only one who’s experiencing the joy is awesome
Thanks for sharing

glad I’m solo for now. Don’t have to “share” with anyone. However, my pops has the spare key and it’ll be in his garage for the time being. He’s welcome to it whenever

My dad has managed a shop that focuses on European imports for my entire life. I’ve had a bunch of VW and Audi’s and he was never really that impressed. I told him (we live on opposite sides of the country) that I picked up an M2 and him plus his entire team sounded pretty excited about it. Felt like it justified my choice to buy something this expensive even more than my own insane mental gymnastic already did lmao.

In addition, when I was in my late teens and early 20s, some of my closest buddies were super into the E34 5-series they were restoring. I was always into Honda/Subaru/VW back then and didn’t give BMW’s much thought (aside from drooling over E46 M3s I’d never ever be able to afford…oh wait my G87 is basically today’s version of that lol). Been pretty cool to catch up with some of them and talk cars again too, 15-20 years later as I’m in my mid 30s now.

I’m looking forward to showing it to them all in person someday, and thinking back on who owned E46 M3s (almost all I saw were guys in their late 40s or older) when I was a young adult I feel pretty proud of what I’ve accomplished today. You should feel the same!

I may have bought a manual G87 because my girlfriend kept putting miles on my RS3 that I was trying to keep low mileage, and she can’t currently drive stick. But hey, this probably helps that go from girlfriend to fiance soon perhaps

I told her if she wants to learn I’m buying an old beat up Subaru because those clutches and bolt action shift pattern isn’t the easiest learning curve and I’m not risking this M2 haha

My wife refers to it as our car but she has absolutely no desire to drive it. She just appreciates it.

This is where my wife is at. No real desire to drive it, but she’ll have fun going on some rides. Unless I scare her, then she won’t go on the rides.

I plan on scaring the shit out of her.

Haha my wife unfortunately gets car sick rather easily. A friend of hers from Brazil visiting and we were taking Malibu Canyon and the friend threw up in her sweatshirt lol…. Have kept it more low key with them in the car at this point.

Sounds like you’ve got a good wife. My girlfriend took the same position after realizing it was a manual, but is also now considering an X3 instead of a Q5 for her next car because she really likes the current BMW interiors

Don’t know how it happened but I definetly married up lol. 😂 She has a 435 (I think) that she bought before we got together because of the red interior. She is happy with it for now…

I'm noticing more people staring and giving thumbs up when driving now, maybe I'm paying more attention than before. I swear about half the time I'm parked somewhere I catch someone snapping pics of my car. I don't hate it.

The best reaction though happened yesterday. My son had a friend over and he noticed my car in the garage. He kept giving it a confused look and then said "is this a G series M2???" I told him yes and he didn't believe me as he had been watching youtube vids of the G87 and was hoping to see one in real life. The kid is 11 years old and I was so impressed that he was referring to the car as a g series M2. I started it up and let him rev the motor, just pure joy across his face.

And my 11yr old daughter tells me “You’re getting that one with the ugly front-end?!?” Then points to a G82 and says “Why not that one?” lol

That is pretty funny. Kids sure have a way of wording things and they don't hold back on account of hurting feelings.

My sons and wife (of course) are pumped for the M2. The boys cause they can drive it whenever they want and my girl cause it makes me happy. My secret will be bringing it home for the first time with all the mods. Eventually she’ll see the money is gone but the car won’t be home. I’m still trying to think up a reason to tell her why it’s not in the garage while it gets ppf/wheels/exhaust/spoilers etc.

This car, at least in ZB, is an absolute attention magnet in general too. I’ve had the car for less than 3 weeks and had random people take pictures of it in traffic, while parked, and this morning I was doing a 20 mile drive to chip away at break in miles and two motorcycles stopped next to me on a highway and gave me a thumbs up before rocketing off. Coming from an RS3 that was under the radar I’m not used to this haha. But it’s fun especially since this isn’t a daily for me!

My gf loves the M2 so much she wants an M3 Comp xDrive next. She can’t afford it alone, but in a few years if we tie the knot I could see us sharing one to go along with the M2. If they bring an M3 Touring here to the US we’ll both be selling kidneys to get in line for it immediately

She’s sold on doing the BMW M Performance school too!!! Do I buy a ring or school first 😝
