F1 2024: Azerbaijan GP - Baku (Sep 15)

F1 2024: Azerbaijan GP - Baku (Sep 15)

Schedule:
https://www.formula1.com/en/racing/2024/azerbaijan

Circuit:
d

Quote:
Baku
When was the track built?

It wasn’t – Baku is the newest street circuit on the Formula 1 calendar, joining the ranks of Monaco, Melbourne and Singapore.
When was its first Grand Prix?

The first Grand Prix in Baku was held in 2016, as the European Grand Prix. That was followed by the inaugural Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2017, which witnessed one of the biggest upsets of the season, with Daniel Ricciardo winning out from Valtteri Bottas and the Williams of Lance Stroll, while Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel engaged in some argy-bargy behind the Safety Car.
What’s the circuit like?

A mixture of wide and open and tight and twisty. The lonnnnng main straight along the Baku shoreline is a slipstreaming mecca, and with cars able to run three abreast into Turn 1, the action often looks more IndyCar than F1. However from there, the track loops around into the city’s narrow, winding Icheri Sheher old town, dramatically wending past Baku’s medieval city walls. As in Monaco, slightest mistakes are punished quickly and severely, while set-up wise, the teams are forced to choose between downforce for the twisty bits and less drag for the straight.
Why go?

As with all city tracks, spectating at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix means that you’re right in the middle of the action when the cars get put back in their boxes. Baku itself is a buzzing city, while food is a key part of Azerbaijan’s culture, incorporating elements of Turkish and Middle Eastern cuisine – so eat up!
Where is the best place to watch?

The principal Absheron grandstand at the end of the main straight should be high up on your viewing wish-list, as you’ll be watching the cars braking from around 350km/h into the 90-degree Turn 1 – and you’ll likely get to watch the lion’s share of overtaking too. Elsewhere, the Icheri Sheher grandstand provides a unique vantage point, as you watch the cars wriggle through the city gate section and power on down to the super-fast Turn 13-15 complex.

So what are your predictions?
I think McLaren will dominate this race....simply because the McLaren seems to be good on any type of track.
But will the upgrades from Ferrari's Monza packeage be useful here too? There is a very long straight, but it's still a street circuit with very tight corners in the inner city. So I think Ferrari won't bring much of the 'Monza packeage'. But we'll see
As far as the McLaren team goes, Oscar strikes me more as a hardcore ruthless racer than Lando, so I could see him win here again.
As the RB wasn't partucularly fast topspeed wise in Monza, I doubt it'll be very fast on the long straight of Baku like it was in previous years.

My prediction:
1. PIA
2. NOR
3. HAM
4. VER
5. LEC
6. RUS
7. SAI
8. ALB
9. PER
10. ALO

PIA for the win again with HAM second. The 6km track with a straight that goes on forever will favour Williams' Albon who consistently has the highest top speed and I'll put him at 5th.

Max says he has a terminal engine issue and needs new parts for all components for Baku?

Interesting that this track unusually goes anti clockwise which puts the tyre loads onto the offside.

There are quite a few tracks that go this way around. 9 if I count correctly (from 25 in total I believe)

This new monocoque/chassis for MAX is all I'm thinking of now, the budget is nearing the red at MK and the battery boost needs more parts money, then there's Checo

They can't spend much money on this car anymore by the Mexican budget crasher.
Little bits here and there . Yes , but that won't improve the car much .

I think the Red Bull focus is on the 2025 season , as they need a 'complete new car in 2025 (the RB21)
Hopefully they won't make the same design mistake...

Eight races left and MAX's Drivers Championship is on the line, RB can't depend on anyone else to win races like at Monza and PIA winning is helping MAX to the title if he's not that far behind. Oscar couldn't give an XXX for Lando getting to the title and he takes no prisoners as we saw.

Max has asked for a more bity front end and sacrificing the rear end if it has to become looser at the back. Horner has told the engineers to execute. Shouldn't be too hard to achieve?

Understandable as the Monza car was understeer and oversteer all mixed in.
