G87 in the Snow?

Hello all! I am close to getting my delivery in the coming weeks. I am located in Germany near the alps, which is an amazing receipe for snow, mud and all of that fun.

My question now is: how have you guys found the G87 as a winter car? Does it drive well in the snow? Handling and so on?

It's fine as long as you have winter tires and drive with reasonable caution.

Do NOT drive on the OEM Summer tires.

The nearest my M2 got to snow...

But the M2 with proper snow tires (and cables/chains just in case and provided the use is sanctioned by BMW and the snow tire maker) the M2 should be ok.

Of course proper care/suitable restraint is still required.

I am not planning to. Would probably end my first drive in the ditch with those tires haha

The photo looks like a prime time opportunity to do some rubber friendly drifting just outside the garage haha

Thanks for the reply!

i wouldn't worry about it just make sure your tire situation is properly sorted.

my driveway is unpaved, >100 yards long with a ~7-8 degree slope on the first half. as long as there is hardpack its no issue. only time i have had a problem was when we got about 2 feet of snow overnight visiting stowe. i got high centered and had to dig it out which comes with the territory of DDing a sports sedan.

Oh I got that out of my system way back in January 2002 shortly after I bought a new Boxster. A snow storm dropped several inches of snow. I went out late one night and was driving around to see how the car fared on the unplowed roads and fitted with summer high performance tires.

Ended up on a bowling alley parking lot doing donuts and some drifting in the snow at around 10mph.

2 feet also is a lot so I don’t expect to be dealing with that. Thanks for the answer!

lots of people mock the standard ride height of the G87 for being too high, but the reality is it allows the car to be more useful to more people this way. enjoy the winter

I understand it looks better lower- but bmw knows that as well. And the reason it isn’t lower is so people can use the car on a daily basis. Hope you enjoy winter too! Thanks!!

Having grown up driving in snow & owned many high-power vehicles, I personally wouldn't daily a 500 hp, rwd sport coupe in snow. I've always had a 4wd or awd second vehicle (even if cheap) for winter months in the snow. Heck you can probably find a cheap winter vehicle for the same cost as a set of dedicated winter wheels & snow tires. Not only do you have to worry about you driving in snow, but other drivers.

I was born, raised, and still maintain a summer home in western New York between Lakes Ontario and Erie. I’ve forgotten more blizzards and snowstorms than most of you have seen. I love the snowstorms with thunder and lightning. It’s Twilight Zone stuff.

I would never drive this car in snow prone areas. Not because the car wouldn’t perform or handle well. My concern would be other idiots driving in the snow. And believe me, there are plenty of them.

Garage List
Don't have an M2, but modern winter tires and traction control are a game changer especially with RWD vehicles.

The bigger concern is that you can't control what other people do.

life is too short to spend 5 months a year tooling around in a mommy mobile or cash for clunkers candidate.

the recommendation for a winter beater for "the price of a set of winter wheels and tires" is ignorant in a couple respects. one, that piece of shit is going to be several orders of magnitude less safe than a brand new BMW. you think i am putting my wife and newborn in a 5k craigslist SUV? lol. further, a safe winter car still needs winter tires regardless of size or wheels driven. cant stress that enough. finally, maintaining yet another car is not something most people have interest in, which only compounds the first point. my wife has an SUV as her car. still gets summers and winter dedicated tires. doing anything else is cheap and lazy.

to the point of other idiots driving in the snow, yeah, this is true, but you can say that about almost anything at any time. my Z car has one airbag. many classic cars have zero. driving those are a calculated risks, too. obviously the safest thing to do during snow is simply not drive. you cannot ever account for another persons actions or how they maintain their vehicle. however, properly equipped, an M2 is going to fare better than just about any vehicle on ratty old all season tires (like majority of the driving public have). its not an exotic car, its an incredibly safe, modern car with an advanced LSD. the only limitation here is RWD, ride height, and being a baby.

Yeah, I guess having a dedicated winter vehicle from the time I was 18 years old was "ignorant". I've had several nicely maintained, and safe winter vehicles over the years including several Jeeps (Cherokees, Grand Cherokees, and Wranglers) that didn't cost me an arm & a leg to purchase nor maintain.

Haha I love this reply. I don’t see the points quite as critical. I was never planning on not driving my new car and buying yet another car is, considering the headache that comes with more cars, not really an option for me anyway.

What others do can also be dangerous to you in summer. And while staying at home is the safest bet I plan on not doing that. Just have to hope they don’t drive into me … Thoroughly enjoyed reading your comment!

This may just be personal preference to some extend. I wouldn’t want more cars than I absolutely needed because maintaining them is, at least for me, not worth it.

your exact quote was that you could buy a nice winter vehicle for the price of "winter wheels and tires". thoroughly untrue. and if they didnt have winter tires on them, then they were not fully prepared for the winter season. control what you can control. i'd take a new jetta on winters over a jeep on no-seasons.
