2013 F01 740i M Sport - water pump

Hi all,

I’ve just been recovered home on a truck after the 740i flashed up the “overheating stop immediately” message.

It’s minus 2 here (London uk) and 10 minutes in to a motorway drive I noticed the internal heaters were very warm, and just as I was pondering this… overheat warning.

I’m assuming that at 11 years and 45k miles, the N55 is in need of a new water pump and thermostat.

For those that have been here before with the N55, should I be looking at BMW genuine parts only, or are there any OEM that are of the same or higher quality (I’ve seen continental’s conti-tech pump be talked about positively).

Any help/advice much appreciated

Chris

No BMW water pump experience but with other cars I always elected to have the bad factory water pump (and while there the T-stat) replaced with a new factory water pump. Not OEM (original equipment manufacturer) but OE (original equipment) and with a *factory* part number.

Participating on a number of car forums over the years too often I have read of owners who elected to go for OEM or just aftermarket water pumps, fuel pumps, coils, coolant temperature sensors, you name it, coming to grief when the replacement part fails prematurely.

Sure not every non factory part fails prematurely. But the number that do is too much for my comfort level.

The flip side is I have had at least one occasion when a factory replacement part (low pressure) fuel pump failed in about 5K miles.

So the original factory low pressure fuel pump failed. Then after 5K miles so too did the replacement factory low pressure fuel pump.

The 2nd low pressure fuel pump didn't manifest any problems but full disclosure I didn't drive the vehicle but maybe 5K miles more.

For that particular vehicle at the time the forums were full of other owners experiencing low pressure fuel pump failures.
