Desperate with my G42: Unresolved Issues and Noises/vibration/rattle
Hello everyone,
I’m writing this post out of desperation because I don’t know what else to do with my car. From the day it was delivered to me less than 13 months ago, I noticed an issue and immediately reported it to my dealer. Since then, the car has spent more than 73 nights in their facilities, and they have been unable to fix it. The penultimate time I brought the car in, after it had been in the shop for 48 days, they told me the problem was a loose clip, which they repositioned. Two days later, the noise came back. I returned to the shop, and this time they replaced the door speaker, but the issue persists. Main Issue The noise is audible in any driving mode but is most noticeable in Sport and Sport+, as it occurs around a specific RPM range, and the car’s audio volume increases in these modes. With the new speaker, the noise isn’t as loud but is still present. From the first day, I sent them a thread from this forum (which, unfortunately, is now lost) that detailed steps to resolve what I believe to be the same issue but affecting the central dashboard speaker. They haven’t followed up on this. View post on imgur.com View post on imgur.com View post on imgur.com While this is the most annoying problem, it’s not the only noise the car has. Other Problems and Noises in My G42 1. Distortion at Cold Start From day one, I noticed a brief distortion when starting the car cold in the garage. It lasted less than a second, but given my frustration with the overall treatment I’ve received, I eventually reported it. On the Spanish BMW forum, someone with a G42 delivered the same month as mine mentioned their dealership replaced the final exhaust section to fix the issue. View post on imgur.com They replaced mine as well, and the distortion disappeared, but now the exhaust tails vibrate and make noise—something that didn’t happen before. I am currently without exhaust tails while waiting for replacements. I’ve attached a video showing the exhaust tails vibrations. View post on imgur.com 2. Vibration When Accelerating Occasionally, I noticed a vibration when pressing the accelerator. It could be felt near my feet but was most audible from the area around the air conditioning, on the left side near the screen. Searching the forum, I found similar cases, including a YouTube comment where someone shared a BMW bulletin with repair instructions. Initially, the dealership refused to apply it because my model wasn’t listed among the affected vehicles. After more research, I found an updated 2024 bulletin that included the G42 and sent it to them. They claimed it was invalid in Spain because it came from the U.S. After escalating the issue multiple times, they finally applied it, and the vibration has now disappeared. View post on imgur.com View post on imgur.com Identical case to mine found on youtube, you can find quite a few: https://youtube.com/shorts/sq4ZqnD49...SKq8wDIcXefYVW SIB 64 05 21: Updated with G42 and many other models https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...02861-0001.pdf 3. ID8 Screen Vibrations The ID8 screen vibrates on uneven roads, especially at low speeds. While it’s not overly disturbing, this shouldn’t happen in a brand-new car costing 60,000 euros. The dealership tightened the screen, which had some play, but the vibrations persist—albeit less noticeably. I’ll insist they fix this as well. My guess is that the issue stems from the screws attaching the screen to the dashboard. 4. Rattling Rear Shock Absorbers At low speeds, there’s a knocking sound every time the rear shock absorbers are engaged. The left one is quiet, but the right rear sounds like a loose part is rattling. I’ve seen similar reports in this forum but haven’t reported it to BMW yet. Based on their inability to solve the other issues, I’m not optimistic they’ll address this either. Please, what worries me the most is the first noise, the one from the speakers. Does anyone know what it could be or what I can do to fix it? If anyone has deleted the thread, please re-upload it. It was a thread that could help many people. |

I'll +1 on part 3. My screen was already changed once for a new one this spring. after putting some 3-4K miles on the car - the somewhat rattling cicada-like noise is back again. the source is exact middle of the driver instrument cluster, where speed is shown. If you press on this exact area with a thumb - the noise disappears. As I've said - the screen was replaced for a new one (I can only imagine how much money this screen costs (IDrive 8).
And now I will be returning with the same issue. BMW Service engineer said that the source is exactly inside the screen. So it's not a connecting cable that is behind the screen but rather the screen assembly that is not repairable at BMW service. How silly it is to have a design flaw in such an important part as an instrument cluster BTW Part one - metal resonating vibration may be coming from underneath the car could it? I could relate to exhaust system mounting points and heat shields from thin aluminium plates that may be touching exhaust when it resonates at acceleration regardless of the driving mode.
