BMW i5 e40 or iX x50

Hi Everyone,

Currently in the market to buy a new car for our family and we're thinking about either an i5 with edrive 40 or an iX with the xdrive 50. I did test drive both and they are great.

I am not a big fan of the iX design but it's growing on me slowly and can probably live with it. This would be our first BMW we own. We got attracted to the brand because we had an i4 e35 for a few weeks while overseas and really enjoyed the car although it was too small for us we really enjoyed the trunk configuration and the car built quality was surprising.

i5 pros:

-Sportier
-Design is beautiful and doesn't look like a minivan
-Seats are very comfortable for shorter person (wife)

i5 cons:

-Dealer here only has H&K sound system and it is absolutely garbage for the price of the car. Need to custom order an i5 with the B&W upgrade to have something similar to the iX.

-Trunk configuration make loading bulkier items more difficult

-No hitch

iX pros:

-bigger battery
-no tunnel transmission so second row can be used for 3 without any problems
-basic H&K sound system is decent
-Trunk space configuration is good for a family

iX cons:

-External look is weird and doesn't have a lot of sex appeal
-It has more power than the i5 but i feel you are less engaged
-Weird steering wheels, is this an issue ?
-Front row seats are not as comfy for shorter persons.

So yeah there we are, i would like to ask you your opinion on this.

I have no experience with either car. I just looked them both up in Consumer Reports. CR really likes the i5. They say that it’s one of the best cars they’ve ever tested. They’re a bit lukewarm about the iX. I noticed that the iX has a not-so-good reliability record, which is unusual for recent BMWs.

Are you wedded to an EV? The X5 plug-in hybrid also scores very high, it’s less expensive than the iX, and its towing capacity is much higher than the iX. But it may not suit your needs for pure EV driving.

By all accounts, the iX is an excellent EV if you can get over the styling. I remember reading the Car & Driver article on it when it came out and the review was very positive (minus the styling). There was some seriously good discounts on the iX as well (although all of their EV's are discounted at least in my area) so that's worth looking into.

Personally, I just can't stand the new 5 series. I had a 530i loaner last month and really didn't like it. The exterior design is alright, but I hated the interior. It's a huge downgrade to me in the luxury department compared to the G30 and it also feels a lot bigger. The iX might be ugly on the outside, but I think you'd appreciate the better interior where you spend your time, not to manage the overall better usability and range.

For me, it'd go i4 > iX > i5.
