305 too big for balancer?

I stopped by a tire shop to inquire about tire prices and was told that the 305/30 R20 tire I’m planning on getting might not fit on their balancer. He said he wouldn’t know for sure until he tries.

Is this a common issue? I didn’t know this would be something to consider.

I’m going to call other shops tomorrow to ask (since today is Sunday and most shops are closed) to ask them.

Exactly. There are plenty of vehicles with tires wider than 305. Discount Tire or America's Tire if you have them near you.

Yep this.

Otherwise you wouldn't have people running 315, 325 etc depending on application. Even your average chain / retail store can handle 305 no issue.

Called my normal shop this morning. They’ll have no issue mounting and balancing the tires.

Strange that the Tire Rack-recommended shop might not have been able to.

Are you putting the 305s on your stock wheels?
Are you increasing the front tires too?

I’m going to do 305/30/20 on the stock rear wheels and still deciding whether to do 275/30/19 or 285/30/19 on the front

My new wheels should be here mid-February. 19x10 and 20x11.

Tires were delivered yesterday. I didn’t want to wait until February due to the uncertainty in prices. Fronts are 285/35/19. Tire Rack is always super efficient. I got them delivered in under 24 hours. Unfortunately, custom wheels take months until they’re in your hands.

Ah ok makes sense.
Do you anticipate having to modify the front fender liner to fit the 285s?

That’s still up in the air. I won’t know for sure until I put the new set on. I’m half-expecting to.

My car is lowered at port MP HAS height with 12 mm spacers and it only barely rubs at complete lock going in reverse. I didn’t modify it because I knew I was eventually getting new wheels and reassessing.

Yeah that’s why I’m leaning towards 275s
I know it’s a simple upgrade but I’m just not really looking to do it.

I'm running a 315 on my X5 and Discount Tire has no issues balancing them.

My other car has 335s & Discount does the mounting and balancing. I've been using DT all across the country since 1998. I don't want to think about the tens of thousands of dollars I've spent with them
