Car Buying Question - BMW E70 X5 Diesel

Hello everyone,

I came across a shop selling an E70 X5d for a rather high price (they overpaid for it at auction almost 3 years ago, but has a very nice spec and rather low mileage). They have had it for a very long time and want a cash deal because every buyer previously couldn't get financing for an older vehicle. I have the cash for the car but will not pay $16k for a car that is only worth $9k max in a private party transaction. I am counting this as a private-party transaction since the shop wants to handle it as such. My question is, what would be a good negotiation tactic to help the shop selling the X5 see the light and just let go of the car? They've had it for 3 years!

Thanks for any insight.

Have you tried talking to them at all? Why not just explain this to them and get them to see reason. You could link them to some comparables and offer the 9k. I have 9,000 cash today, but that's all I have. The "that's all I have" line has been working for me. Every few weeks as it sits there call back and see if they want to get rid of it. You could go inspect it and point out flaws.

Life is pretty short I wouldn't let a few hundred dollars stand in the way of having a nice car. Overpaying a bit for my e53, so that I got it, and not someone else, was one of the smartest things I ever did. It is a tank.

I have tried it all. They're so set on the $16k they want. Originally they had it at $19k but no one was biting. KBB has this thing at $9k for a private party transaction which i think is hard for them swallow.

Some dealers simply will not ever cut their losses. There's no shortage of cars on dealer lots that are never gonna sell because they overpaid. You can try talking about interest costs and floorplans, but a lot of the time they just won't hear it and will wait for someone who will overpay because they gotta have it, especially if it's a unique spec car.

Total stupidity at that point. It ain't even a dealer, it's a small mom and pop Euro shop that sells some cars on the side.

All you can do is show them some comparable adds. And remind them that the vau.e is dropping the longer they hold the car.

Walk away. The deal ain't going to happen.

And with the car having sat for 3 years probably that's the best outcome.

There's always another car.

It's sat cause their pricing sucks. I will say, they did perform a lot of maintenance to it but that doesn't mean I'll cough up 16k.

If they see you are desperate for the car then they won't negotiate the price. If you have been trying to negotiate for the car many times then they know you are desperate.

I suggest you to move on and look for another car as you will not get it for the price you want. There is no other tactics for it

I'm not desperate. I really don't even need a car. I just wanted to see if there was angle I was missing.

I was told they were keeping up with maintenance and such on the car as it's been listed but that concern has crossed my mind.

Just walk away. There's always another car.

I like higher mileage cars. Means theyve been driven. Cars that have been sitting have all kinds of problems typically.

Just for fun run the value here for comparison’s sake. Go all the way to the end to see Edmund’s value. Don’t get hung up on the offers they will show you first. Over many years and many cars I have found Edmund’s to be very accurate with the current market.

X5d has a bit of a following that keep the prices high.
Low mileage ones will command a premium.

Better off finding another one, seems like they don't really want to sell it.

You could just give them your contact info, and tell them in a friendly way that they can give you a call when they’re ready to make a deal.

Then walk away.

If they eventually call, and you’re still interested, great. If not, that’s their loss (if the car never sells) or gain (if they sell it to someone else for their asking price).

That's where I left it. I don't have the energy for games.
