Windshield crack - repairable?

Got the crack shown below. Measures about 3.5" long. Hoping it's repairable. Who have you used? I know Safelite is typically recommended but the locations in my area have poor reviews.

Windshield is cooked.

If you have a good technician, they will tell you this before they attempt a repair. The machine they use to inject the resin has to vibrate in order to seat the resin fully into the crack. That vibration can and will make the crack significantly worse.

Source: me and my F30. Fortunately I had a great tech who explained this to me before he tried, I said so if anyway, and the windshield cracked significantly worse, as I was told it would. He called the home base and another tech came with a new OEM windshield the next day.

Forgot to answer the part about recommendations. I used the BMW dealer for my first windshield replacement, and never again. I've used safelite every other time. After booking online I just call to confirm the tech will bring OEM glass, not OE spec glass. They check to make sure it's available, (always has been), and I'm done.

That's what I figured. Windshield appears to be about $548 through online parts site. I checked with my usual windshield guy and he said his system says "dealer order only" so I don't know.

Ok so first thing put a piece of clear tape on the inside and outside of the crack in the meantime to prevent it from growing. The crack will grow really fast overwise.

I've used safelight for a honda civic with driver assist back in 2021 and they did not use the OEM glass, but they did do the driver assist recalibration which is required. I would say use safelight if it's your only option but request OEM glass. If your insurance has a separate deductible for glass then I would just use that provided they can give you the OEM glass.

Also if you have a HUD, that may or may not need to be recalibrated as well

I had my windshield replaced on my previous G87 last summer. Huge crack so repair was not an option.

My insurance company had Safelite administer the process and I had them work with the glass company that my local BMW dealer prefers.

They attempted to install the windshield and calibrate the cameras at my house. They weren't able to do it and requested that BMW help. I ended up having to have the glass company perform the work along with a BMW tech at the dealership.

Not sure if my situation was a one-off or if it's common to need a BMW tech to help but I recommend asking around and ensuring you are picking a place that knows what they are getting into.

I would attempt the repair, if it doesn't work you aren't out a lot of money and proceed with the replacement.

Take this with a grain of salt, but my insurance company's policy is that if it is less than the size of a dollar bill, it can be repaired.

The most recent time I had a windshield replaced the first Safelite tech couldn't recalibrate the car, but he was able to swap the glass. Once he realized he couldn't do it, another tech came and calibrated it. He did have to drive my car which made me a little nervous.

I'm most likely paying out-of-pocket. Any claim in TX raises your insurance rates, and they're high enough already.

Glad to hear I wasn't the only one with this issue.

I hear you on being nervous when someone drives your car. I was forced to valet my car at a restaurant last summer and I asked the kid like 4 times if he was sure he could drive a stick and had to go over with him how to get the car in reverse (as it was quite easy to accidentally put it into 1st gear instead).

Once a chip turns into a crack it's not repairable, glass must be replaced.

I would have parked across town. I don’t have that kind of trust.

Ha ha. I would have if I could have. It was the only option at this place unfortunately.

I worked valet for a bit at a higher end dealership in LA, with a very tight parking lot. Got some tips based on how well I handled some manual cars. That said, never ever ever ever will I let a valet touch my car lol.

Based on the bmw database that is the correct part number for your M2. Just a side note if you go with a non bmw dealer to do the install make sure they are able to calibrate all the cameras correctly. I know some say they can do it and fail miserably and you'll end up at the stealership anyways.

In TX, what I've been told by multiple carriers and brokers is even if you initiate a claim, but don't have the insurance pay, it can still (does) raise your rates at the next renewal. So unless it's significant damage, we don't make any claims. Yet, our rates have increased 20-25% every six months for the last two years

I have always gone through insurance for replacements being in a state with $0 glass replacement. Have worked with film / tint provider so that it's taken care of as part of the process. That said, being mostly desert landscaped throughout the valley leads to rock / debris on highways and roads. This has translated to 4 replacements in 5 years.

Thought nothing of this until recently when I was dropped from insurance solely for this reason. No tickets or accidents, windshields only. So had to work with my broker to find a new provider that still had decent rates and the level of coverage I was used to. So the next time it happens I'll be leaning more towards trying to repair or just replace out of pocket.
