Possible G87 Purchase

Hi
Currently have a stage 2 B58. What a engine tbh. The noise etc.
But an opportunity has come up to get a G87. Looking for Zandvort blue.

I know handling and equipment is a big step up from the b58.
But wanting peoples opinions on noise. Stock does this car have a nice burble. Prob wont modify the engine or tune it as much.

Will stock still sound good. last thing i want is to be bored with rubbish noise.

Mods wise can the exhaust flap be always open. I can get OPF coded out so that isn't a issue. BM3 may be harder, but is the JB4 any good.

Will i be disappointed when starting up and driving this compared to a tuned b58.

Also any one have pics of a Zandvort Blue

Hi, I have a '23 G87 in Brooklyn Grey, I'm Midlands based as well.

I've had the B58 in an F32 440i and then in a G22 M440i, the F32 had a much better sound as it didn't have an OPF. I adapted the flap so that it was permanently open, sounded great.
The G22 was very muted in comparison, had to switch it to Sport+ to get anything vaguely fruity out of the exhaust, even then it was a bit quiet. The G87 is different, definitely sounds better, but still relatively quiet. For me, 53 years old, it is about right, not too OTT for daily driving. Switching to M1 mode, Sport Engine/Gearbox/Chassis) is a nice balance, some pops on the overrun and a throaty sound. I'm keeping it stock for the time being.

Garage List
I've owned and driven many, many B58 and S58 engined cars.
The B58 sounds better. End of story.

The best noise i have heard from an S55 was a Milltek equal length cat back system (admittedly on an F87 M2 Comp) - to be honest the only time i have heard an S55 sound "good".

Even the M4 CSL and M3 CS don't sound that great, to my ears the B58 is just a more tuneful unit.

If they do a Milltek equal length system for the G87 i'd suggest that would be a great option.

I went from B58 (M440i 71 plate) to S58 (M2 74 plate) and the S58 sounds way better in sport + than my B58. I could not get burbles out of the B58 at all whereas the S58 has em all the time when dropping throttle. In Efficient mode the S58 is still nice and quiet (stealth mode) if you need it.

Agree, S58 tune in Sport+ delivers a deeper tone with some rasp/pops/burbles on overrun. Bear in mind that at least some of that is artificial ASD noise in the cabin, though the ASD button does actually change the valve position.

As I understand it, the OEM exhaust valves only open to c. 85% maximum, so if you want a more full-throated sound you’d need an aftermarket exhaust controller - loads of chat about those on the US forum.

However, if you’re not bothered about being quiet or stealthy and don’t want any aftermarket mods, thankfully there’s an easy solution…. make sure you’re fully warmed up and in S+ mode, with MSound (ASD) active, then with the engine running pull fuse 203 in the boot. This disables the valve actuator and leaves it fully open in all drive modes.

Unless you want to run in eco-poo (aka efficient mode) then just programme the M1 button to your desired drivetrain & suspension settings, with MSound to off and just press that before startup. Simples!
