Took my bimmer to the Formula Drift Night Lights car meet instead of sleeping like a responsible adult. Worth it.
 Featured on BIMMERPOST.com It was such a cool night, and honestly, my photos don’t even come close to capturing how awesome the vibe was. I didn’t take nearly enough pictures because I was too busy just soaking it all in and checking out the cars. Hope you enjoy what I did manage to snap!

The turnout was pretty insane with more than an hour long line of cars waiting to get in. Luckily I was almost 2 hrs early and got prime parking with my humble M2 admitted as a Feature Vehicle!

The goal was to let everyone enjoy magic hour and take photos, then night photos with the twinkling downtown lights across the bay. It officially started at 6pm, an hour before sunset, but I showed up just after 4pm. By 6 the wait was an hour long. By 7 I think they were starting to turn people away at the gate and have everyone else park and walk in. I stayed past 10 because the line to get out was long as well with everyone filtering out. The first 100 of us got validated parking, but I think everyone else had to pay the standard rate, which contributed to the long wait to get in and out. Par for the course at this location, as it was the same for the Japanese Classic Car Show I went to a few years ago at the same location, albeit during the day. Around sunset, the Formula Drift cars came in, engines roaring, underglow lit, and everyone got close and personal to take photos and admire the cars. There was a DJ, vendors, and several food trucks contributing to the festivities. Larry Chen's blue R34 was there, as well as his Supra camera car. He was mingling with the crowd, passing out stickers and taking pics himself. I ran into him several times and he seemed cool. As the crowd started thinning out around 9:30, it became easier to take some of these night shots, especially with a longer lens. Initially I was trying to avoid people and cars crossing the shot, but after seeing the cool light trails they produced with my long exposures, some of those shots became my favorites. The first shot of my M2 G87 is a good example of this, as well as the NSX.

jmg, okay, so the shots with daylight you took shortly after arriving, right? Since you mentioned staying up late I was envisioning an event that started at like midnight and then I was thinking the daylight shots were taken in the morning hours. You got lots of great pics!!

Awesome pictures…
Unfortunately the event was so unorganized. Cops/ushers trying to figure out what to do with traffic, and eventually they would let people in just to show them out. Shame, looks like if you got in early it was cool. |

I don’t know much about FD drivers, but that might be her car. If not she at least had permission as security was around the cars regardless. They would have told her to get off if she wasn’t cleared to Mair ther. Either way, these drift cars kiss the barriers and each other all the time. Damage is just part of the game and her sitting on it isn’t going to ruin a show car finish. These cars are banged up.
