How much is an oil change?

How much is an oil change at a local mechanic and NOT the bmw dealer. My gf owns a X5 but she bought it used, so we were unsure if it was still under warranty. Anyways, We went to the mechanic and he charged us $80 because it needed "Synthetic Oil" and not the traditional one. So how many miles can I go with 1 oil change of Synthetic oil? And is that a normal price for a Synthetic oil change? How much can I buy a Synthetic Oil for in car stores?

thanks!

Check the owner's manual (don't have mine handy) and see what the oil specification is. You should be fine with Mobil 1, however, which can be bought at Costco for a good price. (www.costco.com). Then check with the dealer for the price on the oil filter. Either buy one yourself from the dealer or note the price and then have a mechanic do the oil and filter change. I think $80 is in the ballpark (maybe a bit high) depending on how many quarts of oil the X5 took. Can't remember how many quarts the E90 takes but it is at least 6.

So the cost would be:

Cost of oil+cost of filter+cost of labor= total price of oil change. That can really vary depending on labor cost.

I've read that Mobil 1 0w-30, 5w-30, and 10w-30 are NOT ACEA A3 or BMW LL approved oils. Look for the ACEA A3 rating. And if you want to use Mobil 1 you want 0w-40 which is BMW approved.
