Question Spring Break Problems in Mexico?

My girlfriend and a group of her friends are supposed to be going to Mexico for Spring break. They're worried about everything that's going on down there. Has anyone heard of any problems in or around the resorts in Cancun. Thanks in advance for your input guys.

I just got back from Cancun last week. Things are definitely different down there, I would just have to say be careful about where you go.

There's a national warning issued -

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_p...a/pa_3028.html

It's not the safest place to be going, that's for sure, but from what I've read, they're not specifically targeting US citizens, it's just that they are injured as bystanders. Still, be careful out there if you're planning on going.

Mexico is not a great place to be going right now.. I go all the time but my parents are fraked out about going.. I know my cousins who are more wealthy than us have their own gaurds and choffer bc its so bad, you gotta be careful where you go and be sure never to leave any luggage or belongings out of your hands or where you can see it.. you turn and itll be gone and no one will say anything.. ive heard of kidnappings also (idk bout cancun) but they happen a lot.. just be careful and be aware of your surroundings..

i think cancun itself should be okay. it's a high level tourist area so i'm sure they are really watching out for that area. just be careful of which tours/excursions you go on.

my co-worker just went on the mexican rivera cruise which stops in cabo, puerto and mazatlan last week and didn't have any issues whatsoever. i'm going on the same cruise in 2 weeks.

I figured as much. It's still a rough situation regardless. Hopefully their government gets it under control soon.

That would be my decision. Even losing the $1500 or so for the trip is no comparison for being in the middle of all that ish.

yea, i'm going to Florida with friends

EDIT: the reason I made this post and wanted some input on the situation is because in light of everything that's going on, she isn't sure if it's a good idea to go.

Mexico is not the safe place it used to be. Several Canadians killed there under very suspect reports and the police are corrupt and there is no law and no Bill of Rights like the US or similar in Canada.

I will not go and if you do go be aware at all times that you are a target to anyone.

Were these killings recent?

i live in texas, we hear about mexican violence all the time. it's make local news because some of it spills over into texas. i've been to mexico a bunch of times, my family has a couple houses down there (one in playa del carmen, near cancun, and one in cabo) and no one in our family has any desire to go right now. the violence that the cartels display spills over into the minds of others, with the economy exacerbating the situation. ransom kidnappings (outside of the cartel's operations) have always been common in industrialized cities, but they are becoming more common in the resort destinations as well. this is not to say that your girlfriend is doomed to be kidnapped for ransom, but she must always be mindful of her surroundings and always stick with a group of people...stay close to the resort...it's not the right time to venture too far off the beaten path. security is just poor in mexico, there aren't enough federales to go around and stop all the problems, and i don't ever foresee mexico's security getting any better. lets just say that you'd probably rather be a bering sea crab fisherman than a mexican federale.

pretty sure if you stay in the touristy areas and dont wander around too late at night you'll be fine.

Dont be to sure of that... you get in a taxi they can lead you easily to a trap and hold you hostage... all this talk about how bad mexico is isnt fake, its a nice place to go with a lot of tourists cities but you reallly have to have everything planned right and its best to know people... not to mention its a good idea if you speak Spanish very well so you can blend in... I go to mexico every other month but still worried that something bad may happen... I do know someone who was kidnapped there recently but I rather not talk about that...

The deaths of Canadians occurred on the resort grounds, that is the bad thing. One guy jumped to his death but had signs of a struggle and fight, Mexican Police write it off no investigation.

Be safe there, don't get caught alone and just be aware of the surroundings.

Don't be lulled into thinking the place is like home, in no way is it anything like US or Canada
