BMW's R8 Fighter is coming. Meet the Z10.(Rendering inside)

Quote:
A new design sketch of BMW's upcoming Z10 ED supercar has been released, meaning that an official unveiling could be set for later this year.

Designed by Adrian van Hooydonk, the sketch indicates that the Z10 will feature an aggressive front end with massive air intakes and a large lower spoiler. Other key design elements include a low roofline, dynamic sweptback headlights, and bold character lines that provide a sharp contrast to the coupe's curvy bodywork.

As we have previously reported, the new supercar will draw heavily on the latest advances in technology and lightweight construction in order to provide unparalleled fuel economy and low emissions for a vehicle of this caliber. To achieve this noble goal BMW will most likely equip the Z10 with a wide range of their Efficient Dynamics technologies including direct injection, brake regeneration, an engine stop/start system, and possibly even a heat collector that will turn hot exhaust gases into electricity. When these technologies are combined with the use of lightweight components such as carbon fiber and aluminum, it seems possible that the Z10 could indeed get the same fuel economy as a mid-range BMW 5-Series as sources have indicated.

Power is expected to come from a reworked version of the company's 3.0-liter engine that should produce about 400 hp (298 kW). However reports now indicate that the Z10 will feature a traditional front-engine layout instead of the more exotic mid-engine design that was originally expected.

Set to go into production sometime before 2012, the BMW Z10 ED should cost somewhere in the neighborhood of £80,000 (about $112,000 USD)

Very Ugly but it is only a sketch, reserving judgement.

ummm... yeah, i think that would fail as an R8 killer. here's why:

R8 = 4.2L V8 (414hp) or 5.2L V10 (518hp)
Z10 = 3.0L I-6 (400hp)

in order to "kill" the R8, you must be able to beat it at its own game. right now, if the idea is a nice competitor to the entry-level R8, this idea can do it. Kill the R8? no way.

however, this 3.XL I-6 would make a nice addition to the next M3!

fail.

You have a perfectly good V8 and V10, use them.

No doubt. I don't know how you can possibly think you can compete with a regular R8 let alone the R8 5.2 with an I6 Turbo unless BMW reverses their recent trends and makes the Z10 2800lbs.

Take the V10, give it 5.5-5.7 liters, destroy the competition.

This would be interesting if they can make it happen. Sketch only, but it looks like a frog. A very mad frog.

oh come on ... they should just bring out the M1 hommage under the original M1 name and give it their V10 or well ... surprise us with their v12 that was supposed to come for the CS i believe it was

I already asked a BMW marketeer about that car however... and he said there were no plans for any production cars named "Z10". Ah well .. confusion gets my hopes up for M1 i guess

If it makes it to production I will be amazed, after all they seem to be axing everything else that's remotely exciting.

beating R8 will be a tall task but im' sure BMW can put up a good fight. however, i dont see bmw making a supercar of any type anytime soon. they talked about it but all got shut down because of the current economic situation and the cost to develop such thing and not likely going to earn the type of return to make a business justification for. i'll believe it when i see it.

bmw will continue to make stupid cars that actually makes money like the X6 (and even more stupid M version of the X6). i think it would be great to put the TTV8 into a mid-engine bmw supercar, now that will give R8 a run for its money. tune it to make 450-500 hp.. man..

hope bmw will prove me wrong and create something worth been excited with.
